  14. Laptop Station • Components: • Laptop Computer • RS232 Serial Connection to Data Processor • Delorme Topo Software • GPS Receiver (included with Topo Software) • Matlab Software

  15. Laptop Station Components • Laptop Computer • Delorme Topo Software • Includes Interface with GPS receiver • Used to retrieve GPS coordinates of laptop computer for comparison with those of the Field unit.

  16. Laptop Station Components • Laptop Computer • Matlab Software • Used for advanced data calculations and triangulation of coordinates. • Used for RS232 communications to data processor • Used to map relative positions of GPS coordinates

  17. Laptop Station Components • RS232 Interface • Connects laptop computer to Data Processor • Used to receive coordinates of the field GPS unit from data processor. • Used to send calculated data for eventual display on LCD screen on field unit.

  18. Base Station Diagram From Field Unit To Field Unit Receiver Transmitter Data Processor Serial Connection Laptop Station GPS Receiver

  19. Data Processor • Motorola 68000 Processor & Compiler -used to calculate the distance between two GPS coordinates -calculate the bearing from North of where the LCD unit is located

  20. Field Unit Diagram LCD Screen GPS Receiver Data Translator Data Translator Transmitter /Receiver Wireless Link To Base Station

  21. Data Translator • Microcontroller for LCD provide “smarts” -gather data for the LCD so it can display the coordinates -Motorola HC12 and developing board with memory

  22. Base Station Diagram From Field Unit To Field Unit Receiver Transmitter Data Processor Serial Connection Laptop Station GPS Receiver

  23. Field Unit Diagram LCD Screen GPS Receiver Data Translator Data Translator Transmitter /Receiver Wireless Link To Base Station

  24. Transceiver • North American Radio Solutions • Cost: $40 • Serial Interface • Simple • Short range • 500m

  25. Field Unit Diagram LCD Screen GPS Receiver Data Translator Data Translator Transmitter /Receiver Wireless Link To Base Station

  26. GPS Receiver • Cost: $119 • Serial Interface • Excellent for outdoor environment • Urban Canyons • Dense Foliage

  27. Field Unit Diagram LCD Screen GPS Receiver Data Translator Data Translator Transmitter /Receiver Wireless Link To Base Station

  28. LCD Screen • Crystal fonts – 4x20 Serial Alphanumeric LCD • Character only display • Serial interface • Programmable by any language • Scrolling text • The Price is Right

  29. Risks & Contingency Plans • 1. LCD Display (Character vs. Graphics Display) - ideally use Graphics, else use Character • 2. Not being able to configure LCD at all -use a laptop for the portable unit • 3. RF issues - FCC, bandwidth-gain, range

  30. Risks & Contingency Cont. • 4. Power Issues - portable power supplies for units, battery-powered • 5. Problems w/ Interfacing all components - intermediary components to fix problems
