What is Strategic Planning? • Strategic planning is a tool used to help any organization - including academic departments - do a better job • Teaching and student learning; research and scholarly activity; service • Managing personnel and resources • A process to help all members of the organization focus on the same goals

Strategic Planning and Long-Range Planning • Should be based on long-range vision • Department, College, University • Strategic plan helps guide your department over the next year or two • May be for longer time frame but usually one to two years • Also helps you determine if you got to where it is you want to go

Strategic Planning and Long-Range Planning • Long-range planning assumes reliability and stability of current knowledge in meeting long-range goals • Strategic planning assumes your department must respond to changeability and unpredictability • How will your department best use its resources in a changing environment?
