  1. The Holy Spirit Introduction to Christian doctrine

  2. The Apostles and Nicene Creeds • I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic and apostolic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.

  3. The Athanasian Creed • Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the catholic faith. Which faith except every one do keep whole and undefiled; without doubt he shall perish everlastingly. And the catholic faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity; Neither confounding the Persons; nor dividing the Essence. For there is one Person of the Father; another of the Son; and another of the Holy Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, is all one; the Glory equal, the Majesty coeternal. Such as the Father is; such is the Son; and such is the Holy Ghost. The Father uncreated; the Son uncreated; and the Holy Ghost uncreated. The Father unlimited; the Son unlimited; and the Holy Ghost unlimited. The Father eternal; the Son eternal; and the Holy Ghost eternal. And yet they are not three eternals; but one eternal. As also there are not three uncreated; nor three infinites, but one uncreated; and one infinite. So likewise the Father is Almighty; the Son Almighty; and the Holy Ghost Almighty. And yet they are not three Almighties; but one Almighty. So the Father is God; the Son is God; and the Holy Ghost is God. And yet they are not three Gods; but one God. So likewise the Father is Lord; the Son Lord; and the Holy Ghost Lord. And yet not three Lords; but one Lord.

  4. The 39 articles and westminster confession • 5. Of the Holy Ghost • The Holy Ghost, proceeding from the Father and the Son, is of one substance, majesty and glory with the Father and the Son, very and eternal God. 13.1 They, who are once effectually called, and regenerated, having a new heart, and a new spirit created in them, are further sanctified, really and personally, through the virtue of Christ's death and resurrection, by His Word and Spirit dwelling in them: the dominion of the whole body of sin is destroyed, and the several lusts thereof are more and more weakened and mortified; and they more and more quickened and strengthened in all saving graces, to the practice of true holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.

  5. Evangelical Alliance and UCCF H. The Holy Spirit alone makes the work of Christ effective to individual sinners, enabling them to turn to God from their sin and to trust in Jesus Christ. I. The Holy Spirit lives in all those he has regenerated. He makes them increasingly Christlike in character and behaviour and gives them power for their witness in the world. • 9. The ministry of God the Holy Spirit, who leads us to repentance, unites us with Christ through new birth, empowers our discipleship and enables our witness. • 10. The Church, the body of Christ both local and universal, the priesthood of all believers—given life by the Spirit and endowed with the Spirit's gifts to worship God and proclaim the gospel, promoting justice and love.

  6. The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament • Gen 1:1; 41:38 • Num 11:25-29; 24:2 • Jud 3:10; 6:34; 11:29; 14:6, 19; 15:4 • Job 4:9; 32:8; 33:4 • Ps 104:30; 139:7; 143:10 • Ezek 3:12-14; 8:3; 37:9-14 • Joel 2:28-32 • How is the Spirit depicted? What does he do?

  7. The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament • רוּחַ(ruach) – onomatopoeic word • Breath, or something more? • ‘He’ or ‘it’?

  8. The Holy Spirit in the new testament • Mark 1:9-11 and John 16:4-15 • John 14::15-31 • John 15: 26-27 • Acts 2:1-33 • Rom 8:1-30 • 1 Cor 12:1-31 • Gal 5:16-26 • 1 John 5:6-12 • Is it about the ‘Holy Spirit’ or just spirit, or some other spirit? How is the Spirit described? What does he do?

  9. The Holy spirit in the new testament • Is he a ‘he’ or an ‘it’, a person or just stuff? Spirit or spirit? ‘Spirit’ can mean a lot of things – eg. Flesh vs spirit • Neuter gender – but so is ‘child’ (cf. John 16:14) • Often lacks a definite article • Does he come following conversion, or is conversion dependent upon his coming? Is the Holy Spirit a ‘second blessing’? Do Christians need a separate ‘baptism in the Holy Spirit’ after conversion? Acts 8:14-17 or 10:44-48

  10. Is the holy spirit god? • Holiness is typically a divine attribute – Matt 12:32, ‘blasphemy against the Holy Spirit’ is unforgiveable • The Holy Spirit has divine attributes including eternity (Gen 1:1-2, John 14:16); omnipresence (Ps 139:7-8); omnipotence (Ps 104:30; Matt 12:28) • Equated with God in triadic fomulae: 1 Pet 1:2; 2 Cor 13:14; Matt 28:19 • Name is interchangeable with God’s: Acts 5:3-4 ‘lied to the HS, lied to God’; 1 Cor 3:16 and 6:19 ‘temples of God/temples of the Holy Spirit’ • Divine acts: Creating (Job 33:4); casting out demons (Matt 12:28); the virgin birth (Matt 1:20 and Luke 1:35); sanctifying (Rom 15:16) and giving new life – making people born again (John 3:5)

  11. Does the holy spirit have personhood? • See by many theologians as the weakest link in the doctrine of the Trinity, in terms of biblical evidence • The Holy Spirit has independent personal attributes: life (Rom 8:11); intelligence (Rom 8:27 and Acts 15:28); will (1 Cor 12:11); speech (Heb 10:29); emotion (Rom 8:26-27) • The Holy Spirit is ‘another comforter’ (John 14:15-17) i.e. like Jesus

  12. Does the Holy Spirit Proceed from the Father and the Son? • The Filioque clause of the Nicene Creed: double procession of the Spirit • Contributing to the Great Schism: compromises the role of the Father as the source of divinity; • John 16:7; 20:22; Acts 2:33; • Not filioque makes the relationships of the Holy Trinity imbalanced and qualitatively difference

  13. The Holy Spirit in the Trinity • NT triadic formulae • Irenaeus of Lyon – the two hands of God • Hilary of Poitiers, On the Trinity • Subordinationist (hierarchical) vs Egalitarian

  14. The Holy Spirit and salvation • In classic Reformed theology the primary work of the Holy Spirit is to apply the redeeming work of the Son to the believer • The Holy Spirit brings conviction of sin and points towards the righteous of God in Christ (John 16:8-11) • The Holy Spirit gives us the status won by Christ of being children of God, free from condemnation, able to say ‘Abba’, Father (Rom 8)

  15. The holy spirit and theological knowing • The Holy Spirit is necessary to know God and to faithfully interpret the Scriptures • The Spirit of truth – John 14:17 – ‘will teach you all things and bring top remembrance all that I have said to you’ – 14:26 – ‘he will bear witness about me‘ – 15:26 • The Holy Spirit is the author of Scripture and the one who speaks through it (as in Heb 3:7) • Scriptural meaning comes not through the natural meaningfulness of words or the power of human intellect, but because the Holy Spirit wills Scripture to have meaning (Eph 6:17 ‘sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God’) • Huldrych Zwingli – Scripture has a clear, perspicacious meaning to those who read it in the faith given by the Holy Spirit • Irenaeus of Lyon – Scripture can only be interpreted by those who hold to the ‘rule of faith’, including belief in the Holy Spirit as God
