  1. Fashion “Fashion is something that goes in one year and out the other.” “Clothes make the man.”

  2. 1. What does fashion mean? - fashion is the way of dressing that is popular at a certain time, - it is the main concern of people who want to be “in”. - changes very fast 2. Who is more concerned about fashion – men or women? ...is more particular about... - generally women, shopping means a relax for them - they like to follow new fashion trends through fashion magazines or fashionshows. - shopping for clothes means a waste of time for most men

  3. The importance of clothes 3. What is the purpose of wearing clothes? - the first purpose of wearing clothes was to protect ourselves from cold and some harms, - social aspect - we are taught that being naked is embarrassing, - clothes make us look very attractive, we want to look attractive for the opposite sex 4. Can wearing different clothes express something? - they express a social status of people (according to clothes we can distinguish between the rich and the poor) - we can express ourselves through clothes, our mood, interests, preferences. If we are in a good mood / bad mood – what colours do we wear? .

  4. Fashion styles 5. Have fashion styles always been changing fast ? - in the past fashion styles didn´t change so fast - in many previous centures women´s and men´s clothes were totally different. Women wore just long dresses and long hair. It wasn´t polite for them to wear trousers at all. - in the 20th century people´s clothing changed rapidly. Women started wearing clothes like men – it means trousers, they also shortened their hair

What are people´s attitudes towards fashion like? - some people are willing to spend a fortune on clothes in brand name clothes shop and boutiques. - on the other hand, some people are not interested in fashion at all and they wear clothes according to their own taste and style, they think it´s a waste of money. - finally, there are people who like fashion but they can´t afford to buy expensive brand name clothes and they buy imitations or cheaper clothes in markets or second-hand shops. .

How and where can you get clothes? - we can buy them at the clothes shop or boutique or have/get clothes made - in the past, people preferred dressmakers and tailors ( poor choice of goods in the shops), - nowadays we prefer ratherready-made clothes (it is cheaper) - if you need to have a unique dress for a special occasion, you can rent it from a special rent clothes shopor go to the tailor. 8. Traditional and modern (contemporary) fabrics - traditional materials are cotton, silk, wool, linen, - later they were replaced by synthetic fibres – silk, nylon, polyester - clothes nowadays are washable, non-iron and shrink-resistant.

What is attitude of the young towards fashion? - fashion is a way of self-expression for them - they like to rebel againstadults by means of clothes, hairstyle, wearing different accessories, piercing, tatoos - sometimes they want to copy the style of clothing of some admired celebrity - an important part of an image is hair. There is a great freedom in hairstyles and colours. Some people grow their hair long, have highlights done, others have their hair very short, spiky and often dyed.

  8. Favourite clothes 10. Which clothes are popular nowadays? - the most popular item of clothing has always been jeans. They are worn by generations in various cuts and styles. - clothes popular among girls: - different dresses, skirts – short or longer, loose or tight sweatshirts, colourful tops - clothes popular among boys: - baseball caps, t-shirts or sporty shirts, jeans and sneakers/trainers are popular among boys, as well as tracksuits

  9. Occasional clothes - formal situations (banquets,balls, public parties, job interview) 11. What do women and men wear for special occassions? - women: formal/smart clothes, long dresses, blouses, accessories, costumes, evening gowns/dresses - jewellery (necklace, bracelet, earrings, rings) - handbags should match theirdresses and shoes. - men: dark suit or tuxedo, a white shirt with a tie or a bow tie and dark shoes. - some jobs require wearing uniforms, white coats, costumes, aprons. (in banks, policemen, physicians)

What kinds of clothes do we wear in different seasons? - in spring and summer- people prefer light and airy fibres,e.g. nylon or silk, cotton (we sweat a lot) - we wear short-sleeved or sleeveless shirts, loose blouses, T-shirts, or Bermuda shorts, sandals and slippers, flip-flops. - if we go swimming: swimming costumes (bikini, trunks) - in autumn/fall and winter – warmer materials(cotton,wool):long-sleeved T-shirts, jackets, sweaters, coats, fur coats, anoraks, jumpers, pullovers,cardigans, polo necks, gloves, hats, caps, scarves and boots.
