Using Effective Transitions Grammar Practice
Purpose • Transitions indicate relationships between ideas. • They are cues to a reader as to where your ideas are going (i.e. you are comparing ideas, giving examples, moving on to new related ideas, etc) • Transitions are needed between paragraphs as well as between ideas within your body paragraphs.
How many transitions? In a four paragraph essay, you need a minimum of three formal transitions. • One in the middle of body paragraph one • One between body paragraph one and two (and any subsequent body paragraphs) • One in the middle of body paragraph two
Transition Types There are three main types of transitions: 1. Common transition words- these are “cue” words. These are the most basic form of transitions. Generally, you should be moving away from this type. • Many of these words indicate specific relationships and are only appropriate in some instances

Transition Types • Word Hooks- transitional word/phrase used to connect a continuation in a previously stated idea, using the repetition of a word or a brief phrase. - This is a better, more effective way to connect your ideas.
Word Hook Cont. Example: Shakespeare is considered by most to be the greatest British writer of his era, and all time. He has influenced countless contemporary works in England and abroad. In many ways, he can be considered a literary icon. As a literary icon, Shakespeare continues to influence today’s works including most of today’s popular movies.
Transition Types 3. Idea Hook- transitions used to show a connection from one idea to the next. It is a variation of the word hook, but instead of repeating the exact word or phrase, a reference is made to the idea expressed, compressing it into a single phrase.
