Hartford Doctoral Fellowship: • Dissertation grants: $50,000 over 2 years • Travel expenses to attend GSA & CSWE • Supplemental academic career guidance • Pre-conference workshops & periodic webinars to foster professional development • Cohort-building and peer networking NOTE: The Fellow’s university must provide a $20,000 match. Thus the estimated value of a Hartford Doctoral Fellowship is over $84,000!

  4. HDF Dissertation Grants:(Additional Details) • $25,000 per year for up to 2 years. • Maximum of $10,000 per year may be used for other dissertation research related expenses. • Stipend protects 50% of a Doctoral Fellow’s time • $10,000 match per year required from Fellow’s university.

Criteria Considered in Selection of Hartford Doctoral Fellows • Scholarly merits of the proposed dissertation • Significance of dissertation to improving the health and well being of older persons and their families • Feasibility of dissertation to be completed within 2 years • Qualifications of applicant to carry out proposed dissertation

Criteria Considered in Selection of Hartford Doctoral Fellows (cont.) • Applicant’s commitment to and potential for a full-time social work faculty appointment  • Applicant’s commitment to geriatrics and gerontology • Capacity of applicant’s university for doctoral training in geriatric social work • Nature and extent of the institution’s support for applicant

Characteristics of Successful HDF Dissertation Grant Applications • Purpose of study clearly stated • Relevant social-behavioral theory identified • Conceptual models explicitly described • Significance of study is evident • Research design reflects good science • Timeline is reasonable • Applicant is qualified to carry out proposal • University can properly support student • Shows promise to become a good teacher

  10. Application Procedure • Applicant must submit one original (unbound) paper application, as well as an entire application in (1) PDF file on a single compact disk (CD) to GSA. • Deadlines: • August 2, 2010 (selection cycle 2) • February 1, 2011 (selection cycle 1)

Application Packet • Application Data Sheet • One-page statement of applicant’s short-term and long-term career plans • One-page summary of applicant’s teaching experience(e.g., teaching assistantships, guest lectures, faculty appointments, etc.) • Summary of the dissertation proposal (maximum 16 pages, single-spaced, minimum 12 pt. type size and 1 inch margins)

Application Packet(continued) • Summary of the dissertation proposal including: • Title and abstract of the study: (1 page) • Purpose of the study (2 pages) • Theory and previous studies (3 pages) • Discuss relevant background studies including any preliminary research conducted by the applicant. (3 pages) • Significance of proposed study (2 pages) • Study design and methods: (5 pages) • Timeline for proposed study. (1 page) • References. (2 pages)

  13. Application Packet(continued) • Appendix. (up to 15 pages) • Description of applicant’s university doctoral program (1 page) • Applicant’s curriculum vita • Transcripts of all graduate coursework • Letter from chair of dissertation committee

Application Packet(continued) • Letter from gerontological scholar (Not required if the dissertation chair is a gerontologist.) • Letter from social work scholar (Not required if student is in a social work program.) • Letter from chair of doctoral program • A university approved budget • Budget Narrative • Example of applicant’s scholarly work

Selection Process • Phase I: At least two members of the National Program Committee review each application. • Phase II: Semi-finalists selected from Phase I are presented to the whole National Program Committee for additional review and discussion. • Hartford Doctoral Fellows selected. • Fellows notified by phone and letter.
