  1. 21st Century Network Project Status Approximately 18 months ago work began on the 21st Century Network Project. This project encompasses many facets of network service delivery, including: - Infrastructure (wiring, fiber and telecommunications rooms) - Backbone network replacement - Departmental Network Electronics - Network management and monitoring - Security

  2. 21st Century Network Project Status Backbone Upgrade Goal: Install 16 Supernodes/Nodes by 6/30/03. Status: 14 (88%) supernodes/nodes installed and operational. Note: CSC and ERB waiting on fiber project 01I2E. Campus Network Migration Goal: Migrate 247 LANs to new backbone by 12/31/03. Status: 227 (92%) LANs migrated. Note: LANs connected to CSC and ERB waiting on SM fiber project 01I2E. Production Platform Migration Goal: Migrate 495 server connections to new backbone by 12/31/03. Status: 495 (100%) server connections migrated. Note: Core routers migrated 1/7/04, just cleanup work remaining.

  3. 21st Century Network Project Status Telecommunication Room Preparation Goal: Prep approximately 700 telecom rooms for network electronics by 6/30/06. Status: 155 (22%) telecom rooms prepped. Building Electronics Deployment Goal: Deploy approximately 1500 switches in campus buildings by 6/30/06. Status: 29 (2%) switches deployed. Network Monitoring Installation Goal: Monitor 21st Century Network with HP Openview. Status: Currently monitoring 21st Century Network backbone and WiscNet.

  4. 21st Century Network Project Status Outside Plant Fiber Upgrade Goal: Install 133 single mode fiber runs between buildings by 6/30/08. Status: 6 (5%) runs installed. Note: 13 runs are in project 01I2E. 81 runs are requested in FY03-05. 33 runs are requested in FY05-07. Building Data Cabling Upgrades Goal: Upgrade data cabling in 130 buildings by 6/30/08. Status: 8 (6%) buildings upgraded. Note: 33 buildings are requested in FY03-05. 71 buildings are requested in FY05-07. 8 buildings will be requested in FY07-09.

  5. 21st Century Network Project Status Full Telecommunication Room Upgrades Goal: Upgrade approximately 700 telecommunication rooms by 6/30/08. Status: 27 (4%) telecom rooms upgraded.

  6. 21st Century Network Project Issues State Infrastructure Projects Many of the intra-building and inter-building cabling activities require State project oversight which has been delayed due to the changes in the State budget. This issue has delayed several project activities and will continue to be a problem for upgrading the infrastructure by 6/30/08. Multi-management Options per Building The project has defined three management options (Central, Collaborative and Delegated) for the department’s involvement with the network operational activity. Buildings with multiple departments where one wants Delegated and the others want Collaborative result in a portion of the network without the standard service level and extra equipment costs.

  7. 21st Century Network Project Issues Performance Monitoring Cisco hardware is out of compliance with performance collection standards. DoIT is aggressively pursuing this with Cisco and members of our staff will be meeting with the Cisco development engineers in March to review.

  8. Advanced Research Network Initiative for Wisconsin is an effort to build a dedicated, high-speed network pathway along I-94 from the Minnesota border near Minneapolis to the Illinois border south of Racine, connecting Wisconsin’s university researchers to the advanced network capabilities of Internet2. The Northern Tier Network Consortium A joint effort of the northern tier of states, from Wisconsin to Washington, to put in place an advanced network path connecting university researchers across the region. Networking Beyond Campus

  9. National Lambda Rail Nation wide initiative to provision dedicated networks for research purposes. Wisconsin Collaborative Network Initiative (WCNI) The UW recently convinced the Department of Administration to stop a procurement that would have awarded the State’s next video and data network to a single vendor. This network would include the K-12 educational community and local governments, but exclude the UW’s Advanced Research Network. At present, work is being done to determine the management structure for the statewide network and WiscNet’s role in the provision of services. Networking Beyond Campus
