World Filled With Noise • Don’t have much silence • Non-Quaker youth at a Quaker home • He told a joke to break the silence • Meals began with a silent prayer • Television on for noise
World Filled With Noise • The noise of wickedness • Drowns out the peace of goodness • Called a “roar” (Isaiah 17:12, 13) • Distractions of worldliness • Constant noise of worldliness • Chokes out God silence (Luke 8:14) • Paul Simon’s song: “Sound of Silence”
Need To Be Still • Silence viewed as cancer is ignored • Psalmist wrote: “Be still…” (46:10) • Found in a hymn celebrating triumph over trouble • God is with us • In the noise of life we miss what we learn in the silence
Need To Be Still • Silence a part of the natural order • God silence for 400 years • Silent about the forty days • A natural rhythm of sound and silence • Last supper and then a quiet time in the garden • There He talked with His Father
Need To Be Still • We are to “Be Still” • Stand in awe of God (Psalm 76:7-9) • Silent before Him (Habakkuk 2:14-20) • Silent in obedience (Psalm 4:4) • Must not darken by words (Job 35:16) • Do not oppose Him (Acts 5:39) • Cultivate quiet submission (James 4:7)
Things Found In Silence • Silence reflects confidence • Loud and boisterous attitude covers for a lack of confidence • Takes faith to be still in midst of turmoil • “Cease striving” could be translated “Relax” or “be still” • To be still is an act of faith
Things Found In Silence • Peace in silence • Jesus knew of man’s tendency to be fearful (John 14:1, 27) • God stills the raging sea (Psalm 89:9; Mark 4:39)
