Bootleg Summer • We are going to be focusing on Setting and Character Description over the next few weeks to get us ready to write our own stories. “Bootleg Summer” is a terrific example of a strong setting and developed characters. Let’s take a look back at the first two paragraphs of the story to examine the setting.
Setting • “Bootleg Summer” has a strong setting filled with • Imagery • Tone (mood) • Similes (use of literary devices) • Mystery and suspense—find yourself wanting to read more to see why the character is so down on himself
Character Description • How is the main character described in terms of physical attributes? • What about his personality? • How do others see him?
Questions for Discussion • There are lots of clues that the salesman in the truck is also a bootlegger. Find at least two examples that foreshadow this fact about him. Why would the author have “The Kid” run into ANOTHER bootlegger? What is he trying to show? • What does Cann Langenfeld mean when he says, “no laws will change human nature, which is why prohibition is bound to fail”? • What is your best guess as to what Mr. Langenfeld tried to say to “The Kid” before he is wrestled out the door?
Further Discussion • This is often categorized as a mystery story. Why? What is mysterious about it? • What are the major themes in the story and what do you think the author’s message is? • What do you think of the authority figures in this story? What is the author trying to suggest? • Should “The Kid” be blamed for the deaths of Jimmy and Kidd Cann Langenfeld? Should he blame himself?
