Pawnee originated in Nebraska The Pawnee historically lived along the Platte, Loup and Republican rivers in present day Nebraska.
Pawnee Earth Lodge Pawnees lived in earth lodges and permanent villages, they were hunters and farmers. Their crops were corn, beans, squash and pumpkins. They hunted buffalo, deer, elk, bear. A Pawnee village could consist of 300 to 500 people. 30 to 50 people lived in one lodge.
Pawnee Scouts Many Pawnee men joined the US Calvary as scouts rather than face the reservation life and the inevitable loss of their freedom and culture.
The Pawnee consisted of 4 Bands The bands of the Pawnee were Chaui, Kitkehauki, Pitahauwerat, and the Skidi.
Pawnees studied astrology The Pawnee studied the stars and their earth lodges were built so that they could see the stars at night thru the smoke hole at the top of the earth lodge. Planting and ceremonies were decided by the stars.
Pawnees were moved to Oklahoma In 1780 the Pawnee numbered around 10,000 but by the 19th century due to disease there were only 600. Today the Pawnee numbers are around 5,000. The Pawnee Tribal headquarters are in Pawnee, Oklahoma in Pawnee county.
