Ghost Shrimp By Carolyn Harwick
The Ghost shrimp lives on the bottom of the ocean on the east coast, near the shore. It is only seen during low tide, when it comes out to eat.
The Ghost Shrimp didn’t get it’s name from it’s appearance, because it is a brownish color. But it did get it’s name from it’s frequent disappearances.
During low tide the shrimp comes out to eat, it eats mud. When high tide comes it quickly burrows into it’s hole in the bottom of the ocean.
Reproduction also takes place during low tide. The shrimp comes out of the hole and uses the vibration of the mud to call is mate. Then the mate comes and follows the shrimp into the hole. During high the the mate stays in the hole. It doesn’t come out until low tide.
The Ghost Shrimp is a very interesting animal. It is very territorial and is very neat. Around the outside of the hole is neat little mud balls. The shrimp leaves them there after each meal. This helps ditinguish it’s territory.
