1. Missouri Compromise….1820 • Made by Henry Clay • Missouri admitted as a slave state • Maine admitted as a free state • It banned slavery in the Louisiana Territory north of the 36-30’ line
2. Wilmot Proviso • 1846 • Banned slavery in all territory acquired from the war with Mexico……California, New Mexico, Utah • North supported it • South opposed it
3. Compromise of 1850 • California admitted as a free state • Utah/New Mexico territories decide slavery (popular sovereignty) • Texas paid $10 million to drop boundary dispute with Mexico • Slave trade banned in D. C. but not slavery • Stricter Fugitive Slave Law
Compromise of 1850 passed…..WHY? • President Taylor died…Millard Fillmore approve of compromise • John Calhoun died • The bill was taken apart by Stephen Douglas and pushed thru individually
