  3. Supranationalism…. • A supranational organization is one in which member states surrender power to a higher organization. • Decisions must be obeyed by the member states. • Often courts determine when violations have occurred.

  4. C o o p e r a t i o n+++++-o-n-f-l-I-c-t Supranationalism –Encourage Cooperation and Trade, THUS: conflict is reduced on a local, regional and global scale.

  5. United Nations • Excellent example of supranationalism • Economic and Social Council • Coordinated prohumanitarian efforts around the world • International Court of Justice • Settles all legal disputes submitted to it by UN member-states • Secretariat • Keeps UN operating

  6. Another Example: THE EUROPEAN UNION and Supranationalism >Bringing Europe Together.

  7. HISTORY • Ø1957: The European Community or EC was created in western Europe. • > Open to all democratic countries in Europe. • > Eventually this group became the EEC and then the EU.

  9. ADVANTAGES of EU membership • No tariffs/import taxes on EU produced products going to EU countries • No tariffs = lower prices =  More sales = higher profits = Higher standard of living for all EU members • Common Passport • Common currency • Universal voting

  10. DISADVANTAGES of membership • 1. Increased economic competition 2.      No protection for local industries 3.    Possible unemployment in certain industries 4. Loss of ‘national’ identity

Other Supranational Organizations • ECOWAS: economic union among 15 west African states • LAIA: promote free trade in Latin America • OPEC: coordinate petroleum policies among members to secure fair prices • Arab League: to promote common interests • AU: African Union to create greater efficiency • NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement): created in 1994 between US, Canada and Mexico
