The educational system is not meeting the needs of our children. The majority of male students from the African-American and Latino ethnic groups are not graduating from high school. The large numbers of disenfranchisement is a negative record for the educational system. Definition - The Encyclopedia of Education states that Multicultural education is an idea, an approach to school reform, and a movement for equity, social justice, and democracy. One of the major objectives of multicultural education is to equip schools with the curriculum, tools, and philosophy that allows all students acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to function in an ethnically and racially diverse nation and global village. What is Multicultural Education?
"Culture" is defined as the belief systems and value orientations that influence customs, norms, practices, and social institutions, including psychological processes (language, care taking practices, media, educational systems) and organizations (media, educational systems; Fiske, Kitayama, Markus, & Nisbett, 1998). Inherent in this definition is the acknowledgement that all individuals are cultural beings and have a cultural, ethnic, and racial heritage. What is Culture?
