  2. Phonological Awareness • Phonological awareness is the first building block in beginning reading. • It is just one of the components that support growth in reading skills. (Phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension strategies) • Phonological awareness is an oral language skill that involves the ability to notice, think about and manipulate the sounds of our language. • Phonological awareness is also involves rhyme, alliteration, awareness of words in sentences and syllables.

  3. Introduction • Developed by Reception and Year 1 staff • Team teaching approach • Easy to follow • Initial set up is quite involved but the program then runs itself • Multi levelled • Opened ended • Based around the ‘4 way literacy block program’

  4. Program Outline • Based on working with Year 1’s only in Term 1 and 2 • Focus is based around the 37 most common rimes • New rime introduced each week

  5. Word Wall • Our whole program focuses on and around the word wall • Daily Alphabet walk - sound - name

  6. Monday • Alphabet walk • Introduce 4 new words (one word usually has the weeks rime) • Shape words • Introduce and brainstorm the rime of the week • Handwriting

  7. Brainstorming the rime of the week • Students brainstorm the rime of the week • Each student writes a word on the smartboard • Students put their word into a sentence

  8. Tuesday • Alphabet walk • 4 words from the word wall – student choice • Shape words • Fun with words • Literacy Rotations - Guided Reading - Free Choice Writing - Computer – rime of the week - Sight Words

  9. Fun with words • A4 sheet with rime of the week in the centre • Collection of alphabet cards and blend cards • Partner activity • Makeas many words as they can and record in their books

  10. Wednesday • Alphabet walk • 4 words from the word wall (student choice) • Shape words • Silly Sentences • Literacy Rotations - Guided Reading - Free Choice Writing - Computer – rime of the week - Sight Words

  11. Silly Sentences • Based on the rime of the week • Work through some examples with students • Students to write their own • at rime The fat cat was wearing a flat patterned hat. • ip rime The hippo was wearing slippers when he decided to go for a dip in the tip.

  12. Thursday • Alphabet walk • 4 words from the word wall (student choice) • Shape words • Guess the Secret Word • Literacy Rotations - Guided Reading - Free Choice Writing - Computer – rime of the week - Sight Words

  13. Use the Rime of the week. Give the students the letters of the secret word in jumbled order. Students have a go at making as many little words as they can and record these words in their books. Students will accidently discover the secret word by making the little words. Guess the Secret Word

Program Design • This program was designed, developed and implemented for our Year 1 students in Terms 1 and 2. • In Term 2 some of our Reception students were involved in a very similar program based on blends. • In Terms 3 and 4 we will be working in a composite Reception and Year 1 class. • We are currently developing this program to suit the needs of both the Receptions and Year 1s. (Rimes for Year 1s and Blends for Receptions)

Our thoughts • It is consistent, repetitive and structured • Open-end and suits a multileveled classroom • It is fun and enjoyable for students and teachers • Suits team teaching • Set up is quite time consuming but the program runs itself • Sight word recognition has improved • Improvements can be seen in spelling, reading and writing
