communication and respect are the foundations of a well prepared and educated society
8. MOTIVATION…
9. Well, when I think of Meteorology these are the images that come to my mind…
10. Classic definition: Meteorology is the earth science dealing with phenomena of the atmosphere (especially weather)
11. In reality METEOROLOGY deals with many problems related to atmospheric sciences such as:
12. What is the difference between weather and climate? What would be your answer if someone asked you:
1)‘what is the weather today in the region you live?’
2) ‘what is the climate in the region you live?’
13. Answer: Weather deals with short-term phenomena. This is what you see when you look outside the window: current temperature, humidity, wind, pressure, type and fraction of clouds, precipitation, hail, lightning, etc.
Climate deals with long-time scales. Average atmospheric characteristics AND their variability determine the climate of a region.
Climate depends on the frequency and variability of weather systems!
14. Why should I care about weather and climate if I live in CA?
15. …sometimes the skies can be really overcast even during summer!
19. Why these wildfires get out of control?? Wildfires in southern California – October 2007
Strong Santa Ana winds 21-24 October; hurricane force winds (85 mph = 138 km h-1)
Fires started on October 20th; some lasting 2 weeks; 23 fires
20. In other seasons…(Oh yes, this is California…)
21. Do tornados occur in California?
23. In conclusion… Think about what was shown and reflect on your expectations about this class and how its content may add to your present knowledge of the planet where you live
