Chapter 9 • Julilly feels her bond with Liza growing strong – it’s a bond developed by the promise to run away together • Lester tells Julilly to bring Liza and meet him by the cypress tree at night. • That night Lester lead them into the woods were the met Mr. Ross • Mr. Ross is actually there to help them escape to Canada.
Chapter 10 • For the rest of the week Julilly and Liza work hard to not get in trouble with Sims. • Saturday night,they met Mr. Ross back in the woods. • Mr. Ross told them to walk in the swamp to hide their scent. • He gave the girls boy cloths to disguise them because the slave traders will be looking for two girls. • Julilly, Liza and Adam start their journey with Lester as their guide. Chapter 11 • They find out Lester can read • They learn the password to find out if they can trust people • They arrive in Tennessee and get into a wagon • The wagon gets stopped by Sims on horseback. They threaten the wagon driver with the Fugitive Slave act but don’t find anything so let them go. They had to hide in the back of one of these.
Chapter 12 • The wagon takes them to a barn. It has food and a place to hide for the day. They are given a compass. • Julilly and Liza go inside but Lester and Adam explore the river. • Slave catchers come and capture Lester and Adam, but Julilly and Liza are able to get away because they hid in the barn. • Lester and Adam are chained and dragged away Lester and Adam were put in these and taken back to the Riley Plantation.
Chapter 13 • The wagon driver (a Quaker abolitionist) told them to follow east then north when they reach the mountains. • They sleep in a cave in the mountains but run out of food • Julilly tries to buy food from a lady in a village but is turned away • A German Mennonite farmer finds them and brings them to his farm. He feds and baths them and lets them sleep for the night. Quaker Abolitionist
Chapter 14 • They reach the end of the mountains and find an old black man. He gives them food and tells them to find Jeb Brown. Then they find out he is a slave. • With the man’s directions they find Jeb Brown, a conductor of the Underground Railway. • He feds them and gives them cloths. He also tells them Lester and Adam were just there. • He tells them he is going to send them to Levi Coffin, the president of the Underground Railway. Levi Coffin
Chapter 15 • Slave traders arrive at the Jeb’s cabin and demand to search the place. • The girls hid on the roof and are hidden from the traders • Jeb doesn’t feel comfortable keeping the girls their longer, so takes them across the Ohio River that night. • They are put in a horse drawn carriage on the other side of the river. Chapter 16 • They arrive in Cincinnati at Levi Coffin’s House • Levi invites them in and gives them food • As their eating a the Sheriff arrives. The girls are hidden in the mattress of a bed. • The sheriff searched the house but found nothing. • He gave the girls their first set of brand new girls clothing – blue sweaters. Levi Coffin’s House
Chapter 17 • The girls are put into a carriage • The carriage driver took them to a train station, put them into sacks and loaded them onto a train. • The train arrives and they are unloaded into another carriage. In the carriage is Mr. Ross. • He tells them he was in prison but was released and he has helped Lester and Adam get to Canada. Both made it, but Adam died shortly after arriving. • The carriage arrives at a boat and Mr. Ross takes the girls to met the Captain.
Chapter 18 • The captain takes them to a room below the main deck. • The sheriff arrives and asks to search the boat • The captain hides the girls in a covered lifeboat • The sheriff finds nothing and the boat crosses Lake Erie. • The next morning they arrive in Canada, to find a man in a wagon waiting for them.
Chapter 19 • The wagon driver takes them to meet Lester in St. Catherine’s • He tells them what life in Canada is like. It is not easy, they are still not treated equally. • They arrive in St. Catherine’s and meet Lester. • Then Lester takes them to meet Mammy Sally. She says she will take care of Julilly and Liza. The town of St. Catherine’s in Niagara Ontario as it is today.
