What was It? • The Underground Railroad were a series of tunnels and pathways that went through Northern States for Slaves to Escape to freedom • Some of these pathways were based old trade routes and provided a safe way to the Union
Why was it Important • The Underground railroad posed many dangerous threats to run away slaves. • At times when slaves are on the run slave owners will use dogs to track down their slaves once they were captured they will be beaten or be killed • Depending on the environment slaves will usually succumb to certain diseases
Major Stops on the Underground Railroad • Throughout many Union states there were many houses that were called “Stations”. Inside these stations house owners provided slaves with food, shelter, medicine etc. • Some stops in Wisconsin included Pewaukee, Milton and Burlington
People who helped out • There were many individuals that helped out in the Underground railroad. At times these individuals risked capture to help fellow slaves escape to freedom • Some of these individuals included Harriet Tubman and Sojounr Truth
Tunnels • The tunnels found in most household in the stations were hand dug by the slaves themselves. • Most of these tunnels were very narrow but just wide enough for the slaves to squeeze through the tunnels
