  1. Expectations: 1. Listen carefully 2. Work hard 3. Be responsible  States of Matter: Lesson 34Exploring Solids

  2. What we know: Everything on earth is made up of matter. Matter can be a solid, liquid, or a gas. These states of matter have certain properties. Matter can also change state. An example of a substance changing states of matter is the water cycle.

  3. Properties of a solid:  Solids have a definite shape and size. Explore on document camera. Can you put your finger through any of the solids?

  4. Properties of a solid:  Molecules are tightly packed. They can not move from place to place. Some pure substances can form crystals.  Their molecules are in a regular repeating pattern called a crystal lattice.

  5. Properties of a solid:  Force is needed to change shape http://youtu.be/Yv6tERJizDM http://youtu.be/3DDo37BcChI

  6. The solid state: Some substances exists naturally in the solid state. Others can change into a solid state through freezing. Can you name some materials that can be frozen to form a solid state?

  7. Find the solids:

  8. Assignment:  Read and review about solids. http://www.chem4kids.com/files/matter_solid.html After you review the information on solids click on the green box that says 'Take quiz on solids' and test your knowledge!

  9. I had fun learning and working with you today! Keep your eyes open, scientist.  I will see you next lesson.
