What is PechaKucha? • PowerPoint presentation method which has recently become popular worldwide. • Chit chat or Lightening talk • New (created in 2003) fast paced presentation style, that requires the presenter/creator to be concise and disciplined.
Format of PechaKucha • 20 slides x 20 seconds each • 6 minutes, 40 seconds total • Quick focused illustrated talk • For our purposes, a balance of speech, text, and images was required
In This Case… • … a presentation on a critical coach profile linked to an academic theory, concept, or issue. • Such as, John Wooden and Coaching Pedagogy • What can we learn from this coach and this issue?
Middle • Detail the coach and issue • Why it fits/is relevant? • Make links between the coach’s philosophy/practices, the issue, and coaching related theory/literature • What might the implications be for coaching • How might this be applied?
Notes View Narrative • Goffman’s (1969) theatrical/dramaturgical perspective • Expectations people hold of normal/acceptable behaviour • In everyday life, individuals… • Play roles • Negotiate situations • Forced to be “actors” • Dynamic two-way street of impression management • Giving convincing impression to others, and obligation to live up to it, forces people to behave in certain ways. • The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life - Improvisation Within Socialisation (Goffman, 1959)
Assessment Process • Front sheet, assignment brief and feedback sheet, and an outline and notes view copy of the presentation, handed to the assessor, before delivery. • Presentation also submitted electronically on SNet site, pre delivery. • Self grade, and briefly why, completed by the student afterwards, and given to assessor.
Assessment Process • Presentation takes 6 minutes 40 seconds. • Brief questions, and about 6 mins for assessment decision. • 15 min total bookable slots. • ~ 70 presentations delivered in week beginning 27th January.
Polishing the Content • Making it interesting. • Encouraged to use animations, video/audio clips, charts, quotes, etc. • As long as they still fitted within timings, and were not overused. • Note: - this example is far too text heavy in content • Rehearse timings. • Could use a stopwatch, but if slide transitions set properly not really necessary.
Advice • Still possible to plagiarise – so use own words, literature to back up own arguments, and quotes where appropriate. • Students asked to sell own understanding, and what they have learned.
Moderation/Audiences • A sample of presentations were moderated. • Students told to assume there might be an audience of 5. • I highlighted that I would recommend the best efforts for presentation at HSP Coach Education Week.
Achieving a Good Grade • Emphasise link between theory and practice, through frequent reference to real-world examples, relevant concepts, literature and research. • Choose a coach, and an issue, that there are quality info/sources on. • Some journalistic sources fine, but balance with academic sources.
An Excellent/Good Assessment • Design and organisation of presentation features excellent coherence in the narrative, and very interesting content. Very visually appealing end product, demonstrating creativity. Excellent depth, detail, and quality of information presented. A strong range of high quality sources used.
An Excellent/Good Assessment • Clearly well practiced delivery with strong poise during presentation. Excellent use and pace of voice. Skilful use of brief notes, and familiarity with content. Excellent balance of text, speech, and images. Excellent synchronisation and timing.
An Excellent/Good Assessment • Strong indications of effort in research. Well formed knowledge and understanding implicated. Critical insight and informed opinion apparent in interpretation. Excellent demonstrated ability to link theory to practice. Learning and growth apparent.
