  1. The Life Cycle of a Sunflower By: Jennifer Hoffman And Jamie Toadvine

  2. What am I? • At the very first stage of life I look nothing like what I will look like when I’m grown up… • It’s possible that I can grow up indoors, outdoors, or both… • It may take me just a few weeks to be all grown up, or it could take many years… • I can grow up far away from my parents and I will look exactly like them…

  3. The Sunflower Seed • Black or striped • Shiny and edible

  4. Plant the seed in soil • Add water to begin growth

  5. The Roots • Add sunlight and the seed warms • It begins to grow a root.

  6. The Shoot • After the root grows down into the soil, the shoot grows up toward the sunlight.

  7. Seedlings just 3 days after the shoot came out of the soil

  8. Review the life cycle of a sunflower seed

  9. The Stem • The stem acts as a highway to deliver nutrients to the leaves and flower.

  10. Leaves • The leaves soak up the sunshine needed for the plant to make food. • The leaves also act as a bank, storing food and water for the plant!

  11. Flower • The flower is the reproductive organ of a plant. It produces the seeds. • The bright colors of a flower are used to attract insects who will pollinate the plant.
