Gender in the workplace • Gender Segregation: Pattern in which men and women tend to work in different fields • Pink collar jobs: Jobs with fewer benefits, less money, lower prestige, and more women. • Teachers (80% women) make less than airplane mechanics (97% men) • Pediatricians are among the lowest paid doctors

  14. Gender Stratification • Glass Ceiling: Women in male dominated fields experience difficulty in upward mobility • Glass Escalator: Men in female dominated fields are promoted quickly

  19. Gender Discrimination in the Workplace 2007 the Supreme Court ruled Lilly Ledbetter, (paid less than her male co-workers almost 20 years) wasn't entitled to sue Goodyear for pay discrimination. View Lilly Ledbetter Case

  20. Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act 2009 signed by President Obama plaintiff could sue beyond the 180-day period if he/she did not, and could not, have discovered the discrimination earlier.

Structural-Functional Theory: Division of Labor A gendered division of laboris functional because: • Increase the expertise of each sex in its own tasks. • Prevent gender competition that might damage the family. • Strengthen family bonds by forcing dependency • Restrict contact and decrease likelihood of infidelity
