  1. The Peek-A-Boo Presidency: Wag the Dog and Canadian Bacon Politics in Film Braunwarth

  2. Satire • bumper sticker: honk if know difference between parody and satire; do you? • Satire uses ridicule, irony, sarcasm, exaggeration, humor etc. to expose or attack follies, abuses, etc. • To convey a message about the real world • What other films have we seen that are satires?

  3. Canadian Bacon • Written and directed by Michael Moore • Yell out if you spot his cameo role • Idea for the film came when we invaded Iraq in 1991 (although would be relevant to the 2003 war) • What was the sentiment of Americans for this war? • Moore was amazed at how quickly Americans fell in line behind the President even though many didn’t even know where Iraq was • Made possible by the media blitz that accompanies any international crisis • Rally ‘Round the flag’ effect/patriotic frenzy • How does this relate to the peek-a-boo world?

  4. Canadian Bacon Questions • What is the overall message Moore is trying to convey? • How does each President try to boost their public approval ratings? • How is this film similar or different from V for Vendetta?

  5. Fear • How is fear utilized to generate support for the war? • How is this similar to any other film we have seen? • Is this in any way relevant to contemporary politics?

  6. Military-Industrial Complex • What was Eisenhower’s concern regarding the military-industrial complex • According to Canadian Bacon, what does the military-industrial complex need? • A constant enemy and constant fear • How is this topic depicted in the films we have seen? • Do we have a replacement for the Cold War? • Are Eisenhower’s concerns still relevant today?

  7. Canadian Bacon subplots • What is the message about Vietnam and the start of the war? • Why the reference to mining harbors? • What about the references to race relations? • What is the depiction of popular reality based television (Cops)? • What is the message about corporate crime? • All of these are important but complex political issues that receive little attention on the news

  8. Canadian Bacon subplots • What is the image of Canada conveyed in this film? • Why the negative PR campaign? • Need to dehumanize any enemy • One of John Candy’s last movies, he died four months after this film was completed • What is the nationality of the actors playing Americans? Canadians? • (Americans played Canadians and vice versa)
