Battery • Definition: • Battery is a storage device that stores chemical energy and converts into electrical energy by electrochemical reaction. • Classification: 1- Primary Battery 2- Secondary battery
Some safety tips while working with the batteries: • A word of caution: Batteries contain sulfuric acid electrolyte, which is highly corrosive poison that will produce gasses when recharged and can explode if shorted by any means. This can cause serious injury or possibly death.
Safety Tips(Contd..) • Always use common sense and exercise caution when working on any type of battery, or when recharging your battery. -Keep open flames away from your battery. Take care not to splash any battery acid on your skin or clothes when adding distilled water to the battery. - DO NOT drop a tool on battery. • - Always remove the ground (Negative) cable first!
Some Guidelines to be followed to maintain the batteries. • Maintain Water Level. If your battery has removable vent caps, you should regularly (between 3-6 months) check the water level and add water when it is low. • Keep Terminals Clean. Visually inspect the terminals and cables at least once a year, especially in hot temperatures, for signs of corrosion. If dirty or corroded, clean the connections with a scraper and wire brush. This will ensure a good tight connection. Moreover apply gel once in every 3-4 months.
Guidelines to be followed(Cond..) • Keep Case Clean. Keep the top of the battery clean of heavy dirt and oil with a cloth dampened by ammonia or a 50/50 solution of baking soda and water. Then rinse with clear water and allow to thoroughly dry.
Initial Charging: • Check electrolyte level and adjust if necessary. • Charge the battery for 72 hours. It should be 5% of battery capacity. • Beyond this either discontinue or decrease the rate of charging current. • Continue charging till completion of charge is indicated by:
Initial charging(contd..) • SG of electrolyte in each cell remain constant for three consecutive hourly readings. • All cells are gassing freely. • Voltage across battery terminals remains constant for three successive hourly reading.
