  2. What we will learn today • We will talk about the importance of having a home fire escape plan - AND why it is so important to practice your plan with your entire family.

  3. We have already learned that: • It takes three things to cause a fire • Fire is very hot, moves very fast, and creates and very dark, toxic smoke that can cause death • Through our home hazard inspections, we can make our home safer and lessen the possibility of having a fire in our home

  4. Having more than one will increase your chances of survival in a fire • one outside of every sleeping area • one inside every bedroom • one inside of every living area • one in the basement, if you have one • Every home should have at least one smoke alarm on every level of their home

  5. Get out immediately • do not stop to pick anything up • call 9-1-1 from an outside location • Go to your meeting place outside so mom and dad know you are safe • If your smoke alarm sounds: Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep

  6. Everyone in the home should know two ways out of every room

  7. If your two exits are the door and window, and the door is hot, go to the window

  8. If the window is too high to go out safely, open it and yell for help • If smoke comes in, close it immediately • Signal outside with a towel or flashlight

  9. Check doors before opening them for heat • use the back of your hand and feel the door and the door knob • if it is warm - do not open it!

  10. If there is smoke, crawl on your hands and knees until you are outside • Smoke and heat rises • stay low where the cooler, cleaner air is

  11. Smoke and fire moves very fast and uses all of the oxygen to live • Closing doors shuts off the air supply and helps to slow the smoke and fire • Close doors as you leave your house

  12. tree streetlight mailbox swingset • Once outside, go to your meeting place outside so mom and dad can find you and can tell the fire fighters that everyone is out okay

  13. get everyone together • push the test button on the smoke alarm • everyone practice using their designated exits to escape • meet outside at your meeting place • It is VERY important to practice your escape plan with your entire family

  14. make sure that all windows and doors will open easily • make sure that your exits, either doors or windows, are not blocked with furniture or other items • make sure that everyone understands what to do and when to do it • Practicing your plan will:
