What we will learn today • We will talk about what to do if your house is on fire, and you cannot get out because your exits are blocked by fire or smoke.
We have already learned that: • Need to be prepared in the event of a fire in your home • Every home should have an escape plan practiced by the entire family • Everyone should know two ways out of every room
Get out immediately • do not stop to pick anything up • call 9-1-1 from an outside location • If your smoke alarm sounds: Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep
Know two ways out • Feel doors and door knobs before opening • Crawl low in smoke • Go to your outside meeting place • Stay out - never go back inside
What would you do if you could not get out your planned exits? • What if smoke or fire blocked your main exit and there was no other way out?
The fire is on the first and second floor of your house. Your bedroom is on the other side of the house on the second floor. • You cannot go out your bedroom door because of smoke and heat, and the window is too high to safely go out. • What do you do? Your bedroom
If smoke is coming into your bedroom under the door: • stuff clothing, towels, or sheets under the door • use duct tape if you have it and tape all of the cracks around the door • cover air vents
If you have a phone in your room, call 9-1-1 and report your location • If you cannot call 9-1-1 • go to the window and signal the fire fighters with a towel, clothing or a flashlight • good idea to keep a flashlight in your room for emergencies
Do not break the window! • If you can, open your window a little bit at the top and the bottom to let fresh air in • If smoke comes in, close the window immediately • stay low under the smoke until help arrives
Do not panic! • Practicing your escape plans will help you know what to do in any situation • Knowing what to do will help save not only your life, but others in your family
