To have the skills and knowledge to self-assess your lifestyle and to develop strategies for including physical activity into an individual wellness plan. To demonstrate responsible personal behavior and work cooperatively with others of diverse backgrounds in a P.E. setting. S.H.S. Phys. Ed.Department Goals (Content Standards)
P.E. Department General Expectations Responsible P.E. Student is… • On time to the gym and to attendance area after changing. • Prepared with workout clothes and sneakers (no tank tops, short-shorts, Uggs, sandals, or socks). • Respectful to peers and teacher. • Participating to the best of your ability.
FACILITY RULES • Locker Room: Lock up belongings! Do not share locker unless instructed otherwise. No food or drink! • Backpacks / Books must be kept in your locker. If they do not fit please see your PE teacher about locking them in the office. Do not leave any belongings in the gym during class. • Tardy to class: If you are tardy to class be sure to find your attendance teacher and give him/her your pass so you do not get marked absent! • Evacuation (fire drill): Proceed to outside doors located on King Street. Turn left and head toward student parking lot. Meet teacher at pre-designated area for attendance.
P.E. Core Curriculum • 1. Team Games • 2. Ultimate/Cooperative Activities • 3. Fitness (weight room) • 4. Net Games Depending on your teacher, various units will be offered to cover the P.E. core curriculum.
Team Games Students will learn to appreciate the value of team activities and games through cooperation and sportsmanship. i.e. Basketball, Softball, Floor Hockey
Ultimate Games/Cooperative Activities In the fall semester, students will participate in a variety of alternative game play and strategic scenarios. i.e. Capture the Flag, Ultimate Frisbee, etc. In the spring semester, students will participate in teamwork and group initiatives in cooperative activities. i.e. Prison Ball, Boomer Ball, etc.
Fitness In the fall semester, students will be introduced into the weight room. Nautilus, cardiovascular machines, and the universal will be the focus. In the spring semester, students will be engaged in pre-fitness testing and personal wellness strategies.
Net Games Activities that include a net between you and your opponent that include singles, doubles, and team strategy. i.e. Pickle ball Eclipse Ball Volleymitton Super Tennis
GRADING AND ASSESSMENT Assessments will be given in each unit… • Assessments could include: written tests, self reflection, peer evaluation & skill tests. • There will be one CFA and one closed reading assigned per marking period.
GRADING SYSTEM • Each class is worth 10 points. Your grade will determined by the amount of meeting days per marking period. • This includes attendance, preparation, effort, attitude, skill, and participation. • You must pass 6 semesters of Physical Education to GRADUATE! • Making up a class can only be completed if you have an excused absence. NOT IF YOU ARE UNPREPARED
ABSENCES/MAKEUPS Excused absencesCANbe made up. 2 weeks to make up a class. You can make up 8 classes per semester. • Study Hall (must get pass ahead of time) • Internet Assignment (forms in locker room or on bulletin board) • Outside Organized Physical Activity ( Gym, Dance, Gymnastics, Sterling House, ect ) Unexcused absencesCANNOT be made up. • Skipping class • Choosing not to prepare and participate.
Medically Exempt / Injury If you are injured for more than three weeks, with a doctor’s note, you will be placed in an alternate setting for Physical Education with written work. If you are injured for an extended period of time, with a serious injury, you will be medically exempt from Physical Education for the semester.
Alternate Setting If your Physical Education teacher is absent, and there is no substitute teacher, your class will report to an alternate setting. There will be an announcement made in the morning and a sign placed in the gymnasium.
CONSEQUENCES If you choose not to meet expectations….. • Verbal Warning • Teacher/Student Conference/Detention • Call Home • PE Detention/Office Referral
PE DetentionWill be held from 2:10-2:40 Detentions will be given for the following: • Tardy to class ( entering gym after the bell rings without a pass ) • Unprepared 3 times (after 3 unprepared marks a detention is given for each unprepared mark thereafter) • Disruptive, disrespectful behavior • Abuse of the equipment • IPOD or PHONE use during class time • ** Failure to complete a PE detention will result in an office referral**
