Parents Who Push For Success How can I help my child to succeed? This is a question that all parents are faced with. The educational success of your child will depend heavily on your continued support. Here are a few tips that should assist you in supporting your child as they pursue their educational goals here at Wasco High School.
“How Can I Help With Homework”? 1. Set aside a nightly time where a student must work on homework. They should work in a quiet environment, free of distractions (television, I-Pods, phones, etc). 2. Ask if they have homework. Do not accept a nightly answer of “no” to your question. 3. Ask to see completed homework assignments.
Nutrition • A healthy diet will help your child succeed in school. All students should begin their school day with a nutritious breakfast. A breakfast will provide energy throughout the morning, preventing a student from becoming distracted by hunger.
Alarm Clock • All high school age students should have an alarm clock and be responsible for starting their own day. Allow them to start this habit now so they can develop good habits for the future.
Morning Organization • All high school students should have a morning routine that is organized. • Students should organize their backpack, homework, and clothing the night before school. This will eliminate some of the forgetfulness in the stress of the morning.
“How Can I Support Academic Improvement”? 1.Become familiar with your child’s classes and class schedule. 2. Be aware of the eight grading periods. Students receive progress grades and final grades for each of the four quarters. All grading period dates are available in the W-Book
“What If My Child Is Falling Behind”? Request a parent/teacher conference in the course in which the student is struggling. If the student is struggling in several courses, ask to meet with an academic counselor. Ask for the student to complete a weekly grade check that will update the parents on the progress in each class.
“I Work, I Can’t Get To The School By 4:00 PM” E-mail is a great way to communicate with teachers. You can also follow the progress of each student on the ABI grade book. The grade book will show how the student is progressing in each class (Internet access is required for both options). Internet access is available locally at the Wasco High School Main Office, K-Mart, and the Wasco Library.
“I Work, I Can’t Get To The School By 4:00 PM” • Teachers are happy to speak with parents by phone. You should also feel free to call after hours and leave a message at the teacher’s extension. The teacher can return your call the next day.
“How Can I Get Involved”? Attend “Back To School” night and meet your child's teachers. Attend academic or athletic functions. Students will be motivated to succeed when they feel your support at these events.
“How Can I Get Involved”? • Attend School Site Council Meetings. • Volunteer to be on the Migrant Parent Advisory Committee.
“What If I Don’t Speak English” • Bilingual academic counselors will be happy to translate conversations with teachers for parents that do not speak English. • There are several people in our front office that would be happy to answer any questions you might have.
