Ancient Works • Crusades- brought back information from Arabs about Greek and Romans • Constantinople conquered by Turks- scholars ran to Europe • Francesco Petrarch was a poet and scholar- wrote biographies on famous Romans • Searched for Latin writings and built libraries- Largest- Vatican • Studied Roman Ruins

Humanism and Society • Studies in math helped engineering • Filippo Brunelleschi build the Dome of Florence Cathedral • Gun Powder and new weapons • Cartography- Map making • Better maps- easier to explore new areas • Encouraged men to be active in their cities and achieve great things T-O map=>

  9. Printing Press • Johannes Gutenberg- inventor • Movable metal type • Created many more books- more people learned to read • Scholars could read works and debate • Chinese had a press- did not work well with large type

  10. William Shakespeare • English Renaissance occurred in writing and plays • Began with Elizabeth I • Was a poet-known for plays • Tragedy- downfall of the main character • His works were printed- big shift from religious books

  11. Cervantes • Miguel de Cervantes • Famous for Don Quixote de la Mancha • Adventure story of a country gentleman
