Fresco. The Vatican, Rome, Italy • David 1501-1504. 18’ high marble. Florence, Italy • Moses. 1513-1515. Approximately 8’high marble. San Pietro in Vincoli, Rome, Italy. • Michelangelo was a prolific artist, with a celebrated Italian temper. It is said that he received a broken nose during his apprenticeship, resulting from an argument with his mentor.  • Italy was flourishing under the leadership of Lorenzo Medici, who began a rebirth of the arts called the Renaissance. Lorenzo was Michelangelo’s patron and allowed him to create. Another supporter of Michelangelo was Pope Julius II who commissioned Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel and also design his tomb.

  2. Synopsis • Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475, in Caprese, Italy. Born to a family of moderate means in the banking business, Michelangelo became an apprentice to a painter before studying in the sculpture gardens of the powerful Medici family. What followed was a remarkable career as an artist in the Italian Renaissance, recognized in his own time for his artistic virtuosity.

  5. Michelangelo In one of the panels on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is the Creation of Man.

  6. His works include the "David" and "Pieta" statues and the ceiling paintings of Rome's Sistine Chapel, including the "Last Judgment." Although he always considered himself a Florentine, Michelangelo lived most of his life in Rome, where he died in 1564, at age 88.

Early Life • Painter, sculptor, architect and poet Michelangelo, one of the most famous artists of the Italian Renaissance, was born Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni on March 6, 1475, in Caprese, Italy. Michelangelo's father, Leonardo di Buonarrota Simoni, was briefly serving as a magistrate in the small village.
