Challenges in Multi-family Recycling • Resident Participation to prevent contamination & increase waste diversion from landfills: 68 Million Americans per National Apartment Association http://infohouse.p2ric.org/ref/06/0505.pdf • Costs: Move beyond perception of increased cost; misconception that maintenance fees cover waste management fees • Mobile Lifestyle among apartment dwellers presents challenges: different rules; different items collected; different container styles (5 gal bucket to rollout carts); different building configurations • Onsite Logistics: storage space of specialized containers; central collection containers; transportation pick up challenges; original designs of facilities not conducive to recycling programs, access blocked by cars; property manager turnover, break down boxes prior to putting in bin • 21% of what is put into Multi-family recycling bins did not belong there • 15% of what was tossed into garbage bins could have been put into recycling bins
