  1. Immigration Day EDU-580: Action Plan Kristin Harrison

  2. “Immigrant Day” • Grade Level: Middle School • Can be adapted for other ages • Grade-wide project • Subject Areas: Social Studies, Language Arts • Time span: Approx. 13 days • Purpose: A fun activity to make students aware of their cultural backgrounds and also to develop an understanding of the different backgrounds that make up America.

  3. “Immigrant Day” Objectives: The students will be able to.. • Define the word culture • Complete in-depth research about a culture. • Learn about various aspects of other cultures. • Expand their research, writing, speaking, and listening skills. • Gain further knowledge of the term immigration

  4. Day 1 • KWL chart on “immigration” • Computer lab - students will use list of suggested links to look up facts on immigration/Ellis Island • Complete KWL individually then on board

  5. Days 2 + 3 • Students into groups of 4 • Each group - different culture • Computer lab - will begin to research culture and complete culture worksheet with bibliography • 2 days in library • Continue rest of research outside of school

  6. Days 4-6 • Group will have to create a project to present to class (incorporating ideas from worksheet) • Power point, poster board, video, etc. • In addition: 1 “activity” - ethnic food, dance, book, song, art project, etc. • Begin project in class • Students will be given 3 class days to work on project and activity. Students may also meet outside of school to finish. • Some materials provided -- some may have to brought in from home

  7. Other requirements • One student will be “host” • Host will have ethnic meal at their house (before presentation) • Each group member will bring a signature food dish/drink • Must take picture

  8. Days 7- 11 • In-class presentations • Each group will have 1 class period (45 mins.) to present activity and other findings from project • Reflections at end of each presentation • Students will have to take notes on other presentations

  9. Day 12 • Brief Review of cultures • Test on “culture” • *main points (mostly to make sure students were engaged and paying attention)

  10. Day 13: “Immigrant Day” • On final day of unit - students will dress as “immigrants” • Experience what it was like to go to Ellis Island/showcase of culture project • Travel with group (“Family”) • Lunch: bread and soup • Spend majority of day in line/sitting, waiting • Appropriate dress • Sign name on post/find “family” names • Nurse: height, weight, shots, etc. • Provide research findings to other students, teachers, parents, etc.

  11. Other possible culminating activities: • Virtual field trip/web quest to Ellis Island • Field trip to Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island • Assembly from immigrants/speakers from another culture
