  3. Aerial Overview Survey • Late completion due to poor flying weather for most of the province • Still using “old school” paper maps updated with Landsat 5 and other info via GIS • Getting harder to find good contractors – in all aspects of forestry

Results - Defoliators • Eastern Spruce Budworm • 1,137 ha (114 ha in 2006) • Two-yr Cycle Budworm • 39,854 ha (67,483 ha in 2006) • Western Spruce Budworm • 847,344 ha (603,368 ha in 2006) • Western Hemlock Looper • 820 ha (6,964 ha in 2006) • Douglas-fir Tussock Moth • 88 ha, Expected to increase in 2008

  20. General Mountain Pine Beetle Facts from 2007 • Increases in the North, NW and S Central Interior • SE is relatively calm and not experiencing input from “the big red blob” • “Sea of grey” in the Central Interior • More mortality in young pine

  21. Snow Damage • October 27, 2006 - over 1m of wet snow fell in less than 48 hours

  22. Windthrow • Expected to see the effects of 2006 winter storms on the Coast. • Result: 2,319 ha in CFR but 3,337 recorded in the NIFR (1,147 in SIFR)

  23. Pathology • Foliar Diseases: • Dothistroma – 2,597 ha mainly in same areas in NW but now being found as far north as Dease Lk, Headwaters FD, and in white pine in SE BC (DOS, DCO, DKL, DAB) • Larch Needle Blight – 13,540 ha all in SEBC • Rhizosphaera needle cast – a foliar disease of spruce in Morice TSA – another Dothistroma?

  24. 2007 Forest Health Conditions Report • First draft is being reviewed now • Spatial data and tabular summaries have been available on the FPB FTP site since December (finalized Jan. 7th/08) • Web-postings are pending PAB approval • Expect report publication ~ mid-March
