It covers the accomplishments of aerial overview surveys, focusing on bark beetles, defoliators, and other forest health factors. Key highlights include information on the areas surveyed, budget allocation, infestations, and specific details on bark beetle outbreaks. The report also addresses the impact of defoliators on forest mortality and growth loss, outlining the operational monitoring and treatment strategies for different pests. Outline • Aerial Overview Survey Accomplishments • Bark Beetles • Defoliators • Other Forest Health Factors
Aerial Overview Survey • Surveys conducted by contract in NIFR, former Cariboo region, Nelson Region, and Coastal FR. Staff and contract in former Kamloops Region. • Area covered is approximately 81.7 million ha (~86% of the provincial land base – not all of it forested).
Aerial Overview Survey • Budget: ~$700,000/yr • Includes: • Survey contractors in each region • Map preparation and digitizing • Quality monitoring and training • Annual report, web site update and web map • All data available electronically on FTP by end of Oct.; input into LRDW
Area Infested (ha) Highlights – Bark Beetles
Defoliators • Defoliator outbreaks can cause significant mortality and growth loss and treatment can be justified on known impacts • Operational monitoring and treatment conducted for WSBW and DFTM • ESBW and other defoliators cause damage but treatment not justified • Annual Budget: $843,000 for Btk treatments
