2014 – 2015 Tryouts Informational Parent Meeting
Cheer Constitution • This meeting will cover highlights of the cheer constitution. As a cheer candidate/parent, you are responsible for reading and understanding the entire Cheer Constitution (which can be accessed on the Cheer web page). • Acknowledgement of Constitution is required in the Tryout Packet.
Program Membership • The PVMS cheer squad consists of the following people: • Eight 8th graders • Eight 7th graders • One 8th grade mascot • Cheer openings that occur after camp will not be filled.
Commitment • A cheer member will serve from the day of selection until the last day of school the following academic year. • Year-round commitment • Cheer commitments come FIRST
Duties & Responsibilities • LEADERSHIP • Members will demonstrate good sportsmanship, promote school spirit, and display genuine concern for others. • ACADEMICS • No pass, no play • Cheer follows UIL Athletic Eligibility Schedule • ATTENDANCE • Attendance at all practices, games, events, pep rallies, and designated activities is mandatory. • *Mascots are responsible for attending all events decided upon by the campus cheer coach. • ALL cheer members and mascots are required to attend summer camp and summer practices.
Duties & Responsibilities • SPORTING EVENT EXPECTATIONS: • PVMS Cheer performs at all HOME football games. • Tuesday evenings • Always at Saginaw High School • Rough Rider Stadium for 8th grade home games • West Fields (by baseball fields) for 7th grade home games • FINANCIAL • All cheer members must be current with payments.
Duties & Responsibilities • PHYSICAL • All cheer members must have a current physical on file prior to the first practice after tryouts (June 16th). • Available this Saturday at SHS – please see Mrs. Wood if interested. • Absolutely no jewelry during practices, games, or events (includes all body piercings). • No tumbling or stunting is permitted unless a cheer coach is present. • *Because of the increased athleticism of today’s cheerleaders and the complexity of some stunts performed, there is a risk, as in any athletic sport, or serious injury.*
Discipline • Cheerleaders are expected to uphold the highest standards of personal conduct both in and out of school. • Sportsmanship • PDA • Classroom behavior • Manner of dress in and out of uniform
Discipline • 3-STRIKES DISCIPLINE SYSTEM • Strikes are assigned by the cheer coach for infractions related to: • Academics • Tardies • Absences • *An absence will only be considered excused in the following circumstances: • Personal illness/accident (resulting in missing school) • Funeral or death in the family • UIL or school-related performance/event • Participation • Dress • Misconduct
Mascot • Mascot duties: • Attend all mascot-related summer classes, practices, and camp • Attend all regular cheerleading practices • Perform in costume as mascot for athletic events • Adhere to all parts of the Cheerleading Handbook • Assist cheerleaders and sponsors in managing squad materials • Adhere to PVMS 3-Strikes Discipline System • *See Mascot Guidelines for Practice and Game-Day procedures
Tryouts • ELIGIBILITY • Cumulative average of 70 or above for EACH core subject through the 5th six weeks. • No more than one “N” • No “U”s • No more than one day of SAC • No suspension or ADC
Tryouts • REQUIREMENTS • Attend mandatory parent/candidate tryout meeting • Tryout packet turned in to front office NO LATER than 4:00 pm on Friday, May 2nd. • Attend all 3 days of Tryout Clinic
Tryout Clinic • May 6 – 8thfrom 3:45 to 5:30 pm at PVMS • Learn cheer, chant, and dance • *Mascots create their own unique tryout routine that incorporates clinic material, spiriting, and crowd engagement. • All practices are closed practices. Candidates only! • Videos of tryout material are available on the PVMS Cheer website.
Tryouts • Friday, May 9 • Tryouts will begin promptly at 4:00 and will run until we are finished • Monday, May 12 • Mascot tryouts will begin promptly at 4:00 and will run until we are finished • *Only sponsor, principal, assistant principals, officials, and judges will be allowed in the gym for tryouts. • Parents may not enter the building while tryouts are in progress. • Results will be posted by tryout number outside the back bus area doors and on the cheer website by 9:00 pm after tryouts are finished.
Tryouts • Tryout Attire • Plain white t-shirt & black shorts. Cannot be tight or spanks-like shorts. (No Nike Pros) • Hair back in “high and tight” ponytail. • No bow, jewelry, or anything decorative. • Nothing can be worn that has anything identifying a candidate as a cheerleader. • No fingernail polish and nails at a safe length. • General Guideline: If it has printing, wording, pictures, or symbols, it should not be worn.
Tryouts • There will be NO CELL PHONES allowed in any of the tryout areas. • If a candidate fails to show up for his/her assigned tryout time, she/he will not be permitted to tryout at all. • EMS-ISD will only conduct ONE tryout per year. If a student is unable to participate in this tryout for any reason, she/he must wait until the following year.
New Cheerleaders • MANDATORY PARENT MEETING • May 15th • 3:45 pm: All new cheerleaders will report to the Choir Room at 3:45 for Cheer Fitting – parents are welcome to attend, but not required. • 4:45 pm: Mandatory parent attendance for Cheerleader Orientation in the Choir Room. • ALL PAYMENTS ARE DUE IN FULL AT THIS MEETING! • $449 to “Varsity” (credit cards accepted) • $99 to “NCA Summer Camps” (cash or money order only)
Summer Events • Calendar of Events: Summer Edition (online) • Tumbling Clinic: June 16th – 19th • Stunting Clinic: July 15th • NCA Summer Camp: August 5th – 7th • Cheer Practices: July 16th, 23rd, & 30th • Attendance at these events is MANDATORY!
Summer Events • We will have opportunities to participate in additional summer cheer events (Rangers clinic, etc.). • These events are NOT included in your cheerleading fees. • Additional registration fees and waiver forms will be required.
