Class 5 Choose Your Own Adventure Story Are you brave? Do you have enough courage to face the challenges, trials and obstacles ahead? If not, close this book now. If you aren’t a wimp, read on… As the ‘Silver Mist’ pulls up to the dilapidated wooden jetty, you look towards the dense trees. You can hear evil-sounding squawks from unseen birds, a rather alarming growling noise and something splashing in the water. You are trembling with fear. Sweat is running down between your shoulder blades and you feel really sticky. You can see an overgrown path leading deep into the forest. Should you stay on the boat and travel up-river deeper into the forest or should you get off now and explore the path? Click here to explore the river deeper into the forest or click here to get off now and explore the path.
Page two You have chosen to stay on the boat. You carry on up the muddy, swirling river but it gets more and more narrow. You can still hear something splashing in the water near the boat but you can’t see anything. Ahead of you, the river splits into five smaller channels. Click here to choose the one on the left. Click here for middle channel 2. Click here for the right hand path Click here for middle channel 3. Click here for middle channel 1. Your future depends on which choice you make!
Page three You have chosen to get out of the boat and walk along the overgrown path. It is darker here than you realised and you can hardly see anything. The growling sounds closer. There are lots of tree roots and undergrowth blocking your path. In front of you the path divides into five smaller paths. Click here to go uphill. Click here for path 2. Click here to go to path 3. Click here for path 1 which is stony. Click here for the furthest left hand path that seems to go down hill. Choose now and don’t look back!
Page four You chose the furthest right hand path. You clamber up a steep rocky hill, and the path soon splits into two. Do you choose the right or the left? Whichever way you go, you can be sure of adventure and excitement! Click here for the left. Click here for the right.
Page five It seems easy heading down the hill in the rainforest and you’re glad you chose this path. Of course, it soon splits into two. Click here to choose a grassy path. Click here to choose a moss-covered path.
Page Six As you sail along the left hand channel of the river, it seems to get narrower and narrower. Suddenly it opens out wide and there is another river joining it. You can hear human voices but it is not clear in which direction. Click here to move away from the noise.Click here to go towards the noise.
Page seven You are freaked out by the loud noises you can hear, but they do fade into the distance as you travel further up river. Later on, your boat starts getting wobbly and to rock but you manage to regain balance. You explore this part of the river. You take lots of interesting photos of the animals and trees, flowers and berries. You realise the boat is low on fuel and you have to make a choice. Click here to get out of the boat and walk.Click here to stay in the boat.
Page eight You head directly towards the noise of people. As you travel forward you can see a tribe of people on the side of the river behaving rather strangely. You suddenly realise you are coming towards a waterfall and it’s too late to turn around. You are panicking on the way down as you spin round on the boat crashing into rocks, your boat crashes on a rock and you badly injure yourself. You remember how to make a ‘raft out of the scraps of wood scattered around from when you were at cubs. Making the raft makes you feel wheezy so you sit down for a few minutes. Then you start again. You row down the murky water until the river divides. Click here to go to ‘Murky End’.Click here to go to ‘Perfect Place’.
Page nine You choose to get out of the boat. You feel that someone or something is watching you. You don’t know what it is though. Suddenly, something jumps out at you. You only have your throwing knife. It’s a jaguar! As you attempt to protect yourself, someone grabs you, throws you over their shoulder and runs off. Soon, you realise you are approaching the jetty where the story started. The person dumps you onto your feet and runs off before you can say anything. Turn back to p1.
Page ten You have chosen to carry on down the river. Eventually, you run out of fuel and the boat judders to a halt. You stop and tie the boat to the side of the river. You pull out your knife and cut down two tree trunks – it takes a very long time. You climb back into the boat and use the tree trunks as oars. As you travel further down the river you hear a rumbling sound getting louder and louder. A waterfall! You fall – tumble, crash, smash! As you fall, the boat smashes. You are badly injured. You can’t move. Your legs seem to be broken. You have never felt such dreadful pain. You can’t swim. Your last thought, as you sink beneath the water, is to hope you don’t get eaten by sharks... (p1)
Page eleven You hear a crocodile in the stream near to you. You see a green splashing tail. You quickly turn around but your feet are stuck in the mud. You can’t escape. You freeze in fear. The last thing you see is the crocodile’s huge mouth opening wider and wider... (p1)
Page twelve The Perfect Place It takes a long time to paddle your raft back through all the overhanging trees through the muddy water. You are tired and you feel like giving up on many occasions. After what seems like hours you end up back at the jetty. You decide to take a nap on the shore and then decide what to do (p1).
Page thirteen You are on the river. You are surrounded by trees. Ahead, there is a dead end. It is a sandy bank. As you look forward, you see something shuffling around in the sand. Click here to attempt to moor on the boat on the bank and get out. Click here to climb out of the boat and swim towards the trees.
Page fourteen You get the boat onto the sandy bank. Suddenly, you feel something pierce your foot. The pain elapses and you collapse into silent darkness... (p1)
Page fifteen You climb out of the boat and swim towards the trees. You feel something beneath your feet. You look down and see a tail disappear up your trouser leg. It flicks about like a whip and you hear a threatening rattling sound. You shriek in pain. You look behind a bush and miraculously find an antidote. You use it and find that you have been cured. You look to the west and see a path leading back to the jetty. You get in your boat, only to find that it has a massive hole in it and it sinks immediately. You realise that your only hope is to swim back. Hours later, you stop to rest. You see something approaching. It’s a lifeboat! You’re saved! You will be taken home but you have not uncovered the mysteries of the rainforest. (p1)
Page sixteen You have chosen to travel along the river on the right. Suddenly you get pulled into a current. The boat crashes and a pair of peculiar jaws jump out and snap at you, upturning the boat. You get thrown into the undergrowth at the side of the river. In the distance you can see a boat but do not know if it is friendly or not. Click here to shout for the boat. Click here to explore the jungle.
Page seventeen You have chosen to shout to the passing boat. When you get on, you have to pay all your money to the savages. But you pay up because you smell a gorgeous smell of roast lamb and potatoes! You sit down and ask for your food and they chuck you a tiny crust of bread which looks chewed and soggy. You don’t like it, so they throw you overboard. Suddenly, the peculiar jaws you saw before are right beside you, and they open very wide... (p1)
Page eighteen You decide to hide in the undergrowth until the boat has gone past. Suddenly you hear a growling from behind you! RUN! IT’S ATIGER! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE! You run and run and you can feel the hot breath of the tiger hot on your tail. Suddenly it stops. You see a flash of brilliant orange charge back into the jungle. Two men with knives are standing before you. They escort you back to the jetty (p1) so you can begin your adventure again.
Page nineteen You carry on down the green, murky river. You smell the air – it smells like rotting meat, and you feel ill. You look around, staring at nothing but reeds and tropical birds. You watch a brown log floating down the river. Click here to touch it. Click here NOT to touch it.
Page twenty You decide to prod the log and it sinks into the water. A man appears on the shore. “Lucky that wasn’t a snapper,” he shouts. He sounds Australian and friendly, and you steer the boat over to the shore to join him. He tells you he has found some treasure and that he needs your help to retrieve it. You agree, and follow him down a narrow path. Blocking the path is a black panther. It is covered in fleas and has a blood stained muzzle. It growls at you and looks like it craves humans. It attacks you and the unknown man in a frenzy, tearing you both from limb to limb. (p1)
Page twenty-one You have ignored the brown log but it follows you. You feel very suspicious and stop paddling for a second. It snaps at you. You dodge, and paddle faster to get away from it. You think it must be an alligator. You take out your knife and stab what you think is its head. It gives a loud shriek and splashes around. It sinks into the murky water. Up out of the water comes an overturned alligator. You look carefully and see a shiny white jewel sticking out of it. You touch it. Yeoooow! It’s as sharp as a pin. You take off your jacket and pick it up. This must be a diamond! You’re rich beyond your wildest dreams! A black helicopter is hovering above you, and a rope ladder falls down towards you. Someone in the helicopter is waving and smiling. It’s your old classmate Rory! He greets you with a friendly smile and flies you home. (p1)
Page twenty-two You have chosen middle channel 1. You are on the river. You examine the water and think you see thick, gooey slime in the water. There’s bulky black fog all around you. You see some bright red eyes in the river. Click here to get away from the eyes. Click here to follow the eyes.
Page twenty-three You choose to get off the boat – but you trip over the railing and fall in the water. The pressure of the water keeps you under. There’s a cave next to you with a silver light at the end of it. You go into the cave and the light is actually a jewel. It shines like the moon and seems to be splashing about like it wants you to pick it up. You reach for it and as soon as you touch it, you are blasted into the wall of the cave. Everything turns to silent darkness... (p1).
Page twenty-four You have chosen to follow the strange red eyes in the fog. There is no sign of the captain. You decide to take the helm. You find out that steering a boat is much harder than it looks. You can’t see anything because of the fog, and the eyes have disappeared too. You let the tide take your boat wherever it goes. The water seems to be taking you to the left. You patrol around the deck, wondering what to do next. You hear fish flapping around. Out of water, on the deck? You try to pick them up and throw them back into the water. They turn out to be red-eyed piranhas – a ferocious species which start biting and nipping you. They will keep on biting you until you die... (p1)
Page twenty-five You have chosen to go deeper into the forest, on the level middle path. It is hotter and darker away from the river. You are very hot and sticky but scared as well. You have been walking for two hours and you desperately need a drink. You feel you are about to collapse, when in the distance you can just make out a cold water spring. As you reach it, you crawl into the water and feel your body rapidly cooling down. As you climb out of the spring, feeling refreshed, you notice two paths leading deeper into the forest. Click here for an overgrown path. Click here for a less overgrown path.
Page twenty-six You choose to follow the overgrown path. You start walking. You have to keep trying to put up with the constant sucking of leeches and biting of the flies. It is really hard trying to get through all of the undergrowth and vines of the forest. Your path divides into two once more, but one is blocked so you have no choice. Eventually, you find a clearing. It is a lot cooler than in the forest and there is a river next to you. Suddenly, you feel something skim close to your ear. You see a whole tribe of people firing arrows at you. You try to retreat but several more arrows take you down. You are still breathing but you then see one of the people in front of you. He takes a knife out of his boot. He raises the knife up high and you watch helplessly as everything turns black. (p1)
Page twenty-seven You choose the clearer path. You are running down the path. It is a lot clearer than the other one. You remember the growling noise you heard at the start of the adventure – you can hear it again behind you. By the size and shape of the shadow, you think it is a tiger. You sprint! Ahead of you is a clearing with a river near it. You decide to run into the river to get the tiger off your tail. SPLASH! You run into the river. You see the tiger turn away and slink back into the forest. You climb out of the river and something pierces the skin of your foot. Pain shoots through your body and you fall to the floor. As you struggle to breathe, you see a scorpion beside you and wonder if it stung you. Everything goes black... (p1)
Page twenty-eight You choose middle path number 3, on the level. Plants are crowding around you. Noises are everywhere. This probably wasn’t the best choice. You can’t see anything but your other senses are working. You can hear the animals howling, panting and squawking. You think the noises are horrible. Bad smells are floating up your nose. You have a bad feeling about this. Suddenly, a brown ball of fur hops out of a tree. You think it is a monkey. It is! Click here to bring the monkey with you. Click here not to bring the monkey with you.
Page twenty-nine You have chosen to bring the monkey with you and name him ‘Tim’. Tim thinks it’s a wonderful name. You carry on down the gloomy dark path with Tim hopping beside you. Though you are quite joyful, you cannot see a thing. There is a distracting humming noise ahead. A silver, bright light is shining everywhere and suddenly you catch a glimpse of a human. You keep moving with Tim beside you. He keeps you company. “Hello, young one,” says the old man. “Why are you here?” “Who are you?” you reply. “I am the man of the forest. Why are you here?” You explain how the boat dropped you off to explore the forest, and that you need to find your way back. “OK. I’ll take you back to the jetty. Stay behind me or there will be consequences.” (p1)
Page thirty You have chosen to leave the monkey behind. He is angry but you don’t care about wildlife so you’re still on your own. It is pitch black. You remember you have a torch in your bag. You take it out and turn it on – now you can see! You’re even more scared now that you can see. You see all of the dangers of the forest. A giant iguana runs onto your path. He is in your way. He has something gold on his back. He runs away but you follow him. He is slithering through the dark forest. After about five minutes, he stops. You look up and see an enormous chest. You try to open it and succeed. You are now a millionaire – your life has changed!
Page thirty-one As you walk along path one, the stone path, you see a crumbling castle. You hear a confusing noise from inside it. It grows louder, now turning to a deafening rumble. Suddenly, a jet of blue flame spurts upwards, turning the sky a witchy purple. A man’s voice shouts, “Down, Bessie, down! Good girl!” As you look around you, you notice a worn concrete path leading behind the castle. Click here If you wish to take this path Click here if you would rather venture further into the castle.
Page thirty-two As you walk down the concrete path, you notice the trees are getting thinner and burnt stumps line the ground. Golden statues are on the stumps. You see a beautiful bird with sapphires for eyes. You pick it up and cradle it in your hands. You carefully place it in your backpack. You hear a rumbling and a net falls down behind you. Many other nets start falling too, so you start running, looking behind you. You trip and fall back onto the beach. You have injured your arm, but not badly. Your back-pack is lying about two metres away. You walk to it and pick it up. Suddenly, you notice a glint of gold in the trees next to you. You walk closer to the glint and realise it is another gold statue! Not just any statue but the ANCIENT STATUE OF THE AMAZON! Fame and fortune flash before your eyes. You will become a multi-millionaire!
Page thirty-three You push the wooden door into the castle, and, to your surprise, it opens easily. It leads into a corridor lined with swords of all shapes and sizes. There are also axes, bows and clubs used by people throughout the years. You do not take much interest in any of them except a blue sword with a silver hilt and a crystal embedded in the front. You pick it up and a golden key clatters to the floor. Your gaze turns to the door at the end of the hall which has a golden lock on it. You try the key in it. It works! You are in a room full of gold and jewels. An enormous beast is curled up in one corner, sound asleep. As you gather as much as you can carry, you drop a golden crown and it clatters as it hits the floor. The beast wakes up and yawns loudly. You drop everything, dash out of the room and run down the hallway. You can hear the beast roaring behind you. You don’t stop running until you reach the jetty (p1).
Page thirty-four You choose the left, uphill path. You see some wooden steps cut into the path. As you go up, it gets mistier and mistier. In the distance you can see a wavy shadow. In front of you, you can just make out some crime scene tape wrapped around the body of a tree. You’re sweating now as it’s getting darker, mistier and harder to breathe. You can feel something wrapping around your legs. It’s a snake! You throw it off into the distance and sigh in relief! The sweat is now dripping down your face and you see bullets dug into the ground. Your heart is pounding as you rush across the dusty path. Your eyes are stinging as they have got sand in them. As it is getting so dark and misty, you trip over a log. You go tumbling to the ground. Your knee is bleeding badly but you manage to get up. There are two paths ahead of you. One leads to a small pond that you could swim across and the other is an overgrown path full of stinging nettles. Click here for the pond. Click here for the stinging nettle path.
Page thirty-five You choose the path towards the pond. You start swimming ahead and get swept along with a current you hadn’t noticed. It sweeps you to a waterfall and everything turns black. When you regain consciousness, you are lying like a beached whale on the jetty – alone (p1).
Page thirty-six You manage to walk carefully through the stinging nettles without getting hurt. You look ahead of you and see a beautiful mansion with ivy tunnels and white brick walls. You run towards it. A key on the floor shines in the sunshine – the mist has miraculously cleared! You put the key in the door and turn it. Happy ending! You have discovered the lost mansion of the forest! You have succeeded in your task.
Page thirty-seven You head downhill, but almost immediately the path splits into two. Click here for a damp and mossy path. Click here for grassy path. You have to choose one of them – you can’t turn back now!
Page thirty-eight You have chosen the mossy path. As you trudge and slither across the overgrown moss, you spy a clear path out of the corner of your eye. or to carry on along the mossy path, turn to p46. Click here to follow the clear path. Click here to continue the mossy path.
Page thirty-nine You choose the grassy path and walk along it. You see two people walking towards you. You’re paralysed with fear. They see you and run off. Click here to stop here and build a shelter and a fire. Click here to carry on.
Page forty You decide to stay where you are and build a shelter on a soft pile of pine needles. The sun is burning on your back. You are collecting some rocks and big sticks. It is getting dark and you are very tired. You hear the unnerving noises of mean creatures. You think that you see a ginger blur but you decide your eyes are playing tricks on you. You lie down and instantly fall asleep. *************** When you wake up, the sun is shining brightly. The silent jungle is scary but beautiful. You snack on bananas and drink coconut milk. You carry on following the path until you come to a shiny lake. You decide to have a wash. You jump in and see a jetty a few metres up the river. You swim towards it. You arrive at the jetty and realise you are back where you started. (p1)
Page forty-one You are carrying on into the forest. Suddenly, a boy jumps out of a tree in front of you. Blood is dripping from his teeth and knife. You turn and start running, being chased by this strange boy. You are aware of blood erupting from your hip. You are still alive, yet you notice a knife embedded in your hip. You fall heavily to the ground, in dreadful pain now, and see the boy staring down at you – obviously hungry. He starts dragging you back to his camp where a vigorous fire is burning. You feel yourself being tied to a pole and fire is licking at your feet. He is trying to burn you alive! You realise that the boy is a cannibal! You begin to say your prayers. With delight, you realise the cannibal boy has dragged you away from the fire. You think he is going to set you free. He pulls out a double bladed axe. The last thing you see is the axe blade flashing in the sun... (p1)
Page forty-two The path ahead is quite steep, a large hill rather than a mountain. You are feeling anxious as you make your way forward. You pick up a large stick to help you walk up the path. The overgrowth becomes thinner as you make your ascent which means you can see slightly better. The path is well worn which means that a lot of other traffic has taken this path at some point. From the corner of your eye you see a shadow crouching down in the bushes. You feel frightened but you want to know what or who it is. Carefully you move towards the shadow using the trees and bushes for cover. You are scared but at the same time curious to see if it is another human being. Click here if you think it will be a good person. Click here if you think it will be a bad person.
Page forty-three The thing you are watching obviously hears you and jumps up. You freeze with fright. Suddenly it comes towards you and you realise it is a person. You feel less frightened and come out from behind the bush. “Who’s there?” The voice is that of a girl. You reply, “Don’t be afraid – I won’t hurt you.” Slowly you both move towards each other and realise you are about the same age. The girl has dark, thick blond hair that hasn’t been brushed for ages. She has a dirty face and her clothes are torn and scruffy. Nervously, you move closer and ask her what she is doing here in the rainforest. She explains to you how she ended up here, lost. “Can you take me with you?” You tell her you are also lost and are on a quest to get out yourself. She can go with you if she wants. She turns round to where she was sitting and picks up a bag with her belongings in it. She walks ahead with you. She is scared that something will leap out of nowhere. She takes you to a deeper, darker part of the rainforest and reaches into her bag. You see a silvery item. She points it at you. It’s a knife! You run like water sliding down the side of a rock. You manage to lose sight of the girl. Your heart is pounding like mad and sweat is trickling down your face. You look up. Amazingly, you see a very old pile of coins worth millions of pounds. You jump for joy! You have succeeded. You cram everything into your backpack and head to where the forest lighter. Soon, you see the jetty and the ‘Silver Mist’ waiting to take you back to safety. (p1)
Page forty-four The thing you are watching is eating something that is dripping what looks like blood. He is making loud lip-slapping, savage chewing noises. Suddenly you step on a twig and the loud crack it makes disturbs the being. He lifts his head and turns to look straight at you. He drops whatever he is holding and pulls out a very, very big blood stained machete. He aims the machete at you and launches it at you. You duck down and the machete hits the tree above you sending down a shower of splinters. You look back towards the man who is running towards you. He has another weapon – a very, very big knife. You stumble and run, and bump into a tree, hitting your head. You feel faint and dizzy and fall to the ground. You feel a very sharp pain in your chest and the last thing you see is the man’s gruesome yellow eyes gazing over you... (p1)
Page forty-five You have chosen the clear path. Suddenly you see a king cobra emerge silently from the undergrowth. You turn and run helplessly. You think you see light ahead and run towards it, unfortunately tripping over a tree root. At that very moment in time, a tree decides to fall down. You need to roll away from it and amazingly you succeed! It seems you have lost the cobra, too. However, the light you saw was the edge of a steep cliff. You feel that the sensation of falling will go on forever and your screams echo off the cliffs. The last thing you hear is a loud scream – your own! (p1)
Page forty-six As you carry on through the overgrown mossy path, a gorilla lands in front of you. He is massive and towers over you. You are almost completely paralysed by fear. You manage to raise your fists. To your surprise, he runs away in fear – but not before you notice he has been hit in the head by an arrow. You are amazed as you had no idea where it came from. You hear a voice behind you shouting “headshot!” and you spin round towards the sound. Another crooked black arrow is fired in your direction. You try to jump out of the way. Unluckily the arrow was aimed to go past you and you have moved into its path. Death is instantaneous. (p1)
