The History Starting in 2500 B.C., rice has been a source of food for people. Rice production originated in China, and was spread to countries such as Sri Lanka and India. It is believed that rice was brought to West Asia and Greece in 300 B.C. by Alexander the Great's armies.In 800 A.D., people in East Africa traded with people from India and Indonesia and were introduced to rice. Rice grows in plants. The plant can be grown in lands and wet lands. These rice plants can be grown up to 2-6 feet tall. Rice is grown in large fields. The farmer sections the field with something called a sluith gate. He then puts rice seeds all of the fields and also floods the field.He uses the gates to control the level of the water in different parts of the field. After the rice seeds, he lets the area dry up, and harvest the crop with a harvester.
