  1. Animal Kingdom – Part II

  2. Mollusks • Gastropod • Pod = feet • Gastro = stomach

  3. Mollusks • Bivalve • Bi = 2

  4. Mollusks • Cephalopod • Cephalo = head

  5. Mollusks

  6. Arthropod • What does arthropod mean? • Jointed Foot

  7. Arthropods • List 4 characteristics of arthropods • Jointed appendages • Exoskeleton (external skeleton) • Segmented body • Open circulatory system

  8. Arthropod • Name some types of appendages arthropods have • Claws/pincers • Antennae • Legs • Wings • How does the exoskeleton help with survival? • Keeps moisture inside the animal • Protects the animal

  9. Arthropod • Name the major classes of arthropods • Arachnids (spiders, scorpions, ticks, and mites) • Diplopods (millipedes) • Chilopods (centipedes) • Insects • Crustaceans ( crabs, lobsters, crayfish and shrimp)

  10. Arthropods • What is molting? • Shedding the exoskeleton when it is too small.

  11. Arthropods • How do arthropods develop into adults? • Metamorphosis • Complete metamorphosis stages – egg, larva, pupa, adult • Incomplete metamorphosis stages- egg, nymph, adult

  12. Arthropods

  13. Insects • Did you know… • Insects make up about ½ of all scientifically described organisms (including animals) • Approximately 12 insect species are discovered each day, and experts think that 10 million to 100 million species have yet to be discovered.

  14. Insects • Insects are the strongest jumpers in the world for their size and weight. A flea can jump 200 times it’s body length- equivalent to a man leaping 5 city blocks. • Some 450 species of plants prey on insects and other small creatures • An ant can pick up a stone 50 times its own weight

  15. Insects • Queen termites may live as long as 50 years, adult mayflies may live only a few hours • A caterpillar had more than 4,000 distinct muscles, people have 800 • An army ant colony on the march may contain as many as 100,000 members and will kill any animal in it’s path • A fairy fly, the smallest insect known to exist, would fit inside a period at the end of a sentence.

  16. Insects

  17. Insects • FEED – with a variety of mouthparts • Herbivores • Carnivores • Scavengers • Decomposers • Parasites

  18. Insects • Helpful • Honey • Silk • Plant pollination • Decomposition • Kill harmful insects

  19. Insects • Defenses • Sting • Release chemicals • Camouflage • Mimic (mimicry)

  20. Echinoderms • Organization of body • 5 part radially symmetric • Internal skeleton • Water vascular system ( fluid filled tubes that carry food & oxygen to cells and wastes away from cell)

  21. Echinoderms • Can regenerate • Feeding • Many clamp onto bivalve mollusks and open them using suction cups on their arms
