While the foundational criteria in thematic philately seem to be similar to the other classes, their nuances are actually different because of the importance of “Development” (“Treatment”) in Thematic Philately Class. • Requires more: • Training • Experience in judging • - Importance of mentorship. • Quality Assurance (Experienced Oversight) ThematicPhilatelyCommissionMISSION 2012-2016 Thematic Philately Commission 2012-2016 roadmap
Thematic Administration is more intense than other classes • Thematic exhibits use exhibition forum and feedback to help their evolution and development • Thematic philately has the need for comparable judgment from one exhibition to the other so that points and medal levels do not have wild variances. • Constant need for juries to: • Have continuous training and formal reflection • Discuss their work through regular roundtables Thematic Philately CommissionMISSION 2012-2016 Thematic Philately Commission 2012-2016 roadmap
Maintain ongoing communications with the FIP President and FIP Board regarding issues and developments in the Thematic Class • Expand training with regard to existing rules through continuous educational opportunities for exhibitors and jurors • Regularly hold seminars in conjunction with FIP, Continental and the larger National exhibitions • Provide guidance on matters pertaining to Thematic Philately Class at FIP and Continental exhibitions: • Ongoing representation of the Commission members on juries • Seminars for juror-candidates in the field of thematic philately • Continuing education seminars and “roundtables” for existing accredited jurors to discuss issues and perspectives • Commission input on the selection of thematic team leaders (formerly requiring the signature of the commission chairman) ThematicPhilatelyCommissionFACTORS FOR SUCCESS 2012-2016 Thematic Philately Commission 2012-2016 roadmap
Proposed Activities of the Commission in the Coming Term: • The Commission Bureau needs to communicate (meet) regularly • Seminars for exhibitors (1/2 day) in conjunction with FIP exhibitions • Two team leader weekend seminars • (one in Europe and one in Asia/America) • Two juror weekend seminars (one in Europe and one in Asia/America) • TC NEWS Bulletin regularly • TC Website ThematicPhilatelyCommissionACTIVITIES 2012-2016 Thematic Philately Commission 2012-2016 roadmap

The Commission’s focus would be to harmonize* a clear answer on the most common question from exhibitors to judges ”How can I improve my exhibit and get more points?” * Based on the current FIP practices (GREV, SREV and GL)

Understanding competitive Thematic Philately begins by understanding the founding criteria ”Concept and Approach” 40% ”Material” 60%
Why? – The answer lays in understanding the philatelic material © Giancarlo Morolli Postal documents relating to any facet of postal aspect are used in order to contribute to the exhibits’ development
The point is that being able to collect the material and treat it according to a thematic concept is the key factor for success in thematic philately Score 4 3,5 3 MATERIAL 3 3 Medal Vermeil Silver Gold Large Gold Large Vermeil Bronze Large Silver Silverbronze
1st generation The 1st generation of thematic exhibits is characterised by a simple presentation of postage stamps in (pre-printed) albums. (Topical philately)
2nd generation The 2nd generation of thematic exhibits is characterized by exhibitors’ own proprietary exhibition page layouts and brief textual descriptions of presented postage stamps. (Topical philtely)
2,5th generation The 2.5th generation of thematic exhibits is characterised by an inclusion of truly diversified philatelic material. (Topical philtely)
3rd generation The 3rd generation of thematic exhibits is characterised by detailed accompanying texts with close relation to specific philatelic materials (“philatelic dialogue”). (Thematic philtely)
3,5th generation The 3.5th generation of thematic exhibits is characterised by a significant increase and balanced use of diversified and high quality appropriate philatelic materials. (Thematic philtely)
4th Generation The 4th generation of thematic exhibits is characterised by a highly specialized thematic treatment and the inclusion of diversified and extremely rare philatelic materials.

The challenge for Thematic Philately in today’s context The wrong picture of the Thematic Philately Class
40/60 ”Only five rules“ The Thematic Commission tries to address that there are only five rules in the thematic class: The concept shown by the exhibit The exhibit shall show a clear concept of the subject treated, meaning that the title must describe the content of the exhibit. The concept shall be laid out in an introductory statement, which must be written in one of the F.I.P. official languages. The selection of material must be based on philatelic qualification The exhibit shall consist solely of relevant philatelic material supporting the thematic documentation and text (supporting the concept). The selection of material must be based on thematic qualification The philatelic material selected must be fully consistent with the subject chosen and ensure continuity and understanding of the thematic subject and illustrate the relevant aspects of knowledge. It is also important that the selection of material should show the appreciation of the exhibitor as to what is available in the context of the exhibited subject. The selection of material must be based on philatelic range and quality The selection of material should include the fullest range of relevant philatelic material of the highest available quality. The presentation of the exhibit The presentation and the accompanying text of the exhibit should be simple, tasteful and well balanced. The presentation must also add information to that provided by the material and show the level of understanding of the subject and the relevant research by the exhibitor.
