1 HACKATHONS TO TRAIN NEW GENERATION ON GPU ACCELERATED COMPUTING If you’re willing to learn fast, here’s your chance to see your code run fast. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has organized a series of five hackathons to help people learn how to accelerate their projects with GPUs. The event’s organizers are looking for current or prospective user groups of big hybrid CPU- GPU systems. Teams of three or more developers with an application that could benefit from GPU accelerators, or one running on accelerators that needs optimization, are encouraged to participate. BLOG
2 CURRENT TRENDS IN TOOLS FOR LARGE-SCALE MACHINE LEARNING During the past decade, enterprises have begun using machine learning (ML) to collect and analyze large amounts of data to obtain a competitive advantage. Now some are looking to go even deeper – using a subset of machine learning techniques called deep learning (DL), they are seeking to delve into the more esoteric properties hidden in the data. The goal is to create predictive applications for such areas as fraud detection, demand forecasting, click prediction, and other data-intensive analyses. ARTICLE
3 NVIDIA PASCAL GPUS COME TO ADVANCED CLUSTERING TECHNOLOGIES Missouri-based Advanced Clustering Technologies is helping customers solve challenges by integrating NVIDIA Tesla P100 accelerators into its line of high performance computing clusters. Advanced Clustering Technologies builds custom, turn-key HPC clusters that are used for a wide range of workloads including analytics, deep learning, life sciences, engineering simulation and modeling, climate and weather study, energy exploration, and improving manufacturing processes. TREE’S COMPANY: AI MAPS BIOLOGICAL RICHES OF THE RAINFOREST Asner, an ecologist at the Carnegie Institution for Science and Stanford University, uses artificial intelligence and a powerful spectral imaging method to map the rainforest in unprecedented detail. By identifying each tree species by its chemical composition, he has shown the rainforest is more diverse than anyone thought. Asner’s map takes the guesswork out of protecting one of the most biodiverse places on Earth and pinpointing new areas for conservation. BLOG
AUTOMATICALLY DETECT NUCLEAR POWER PLANT CRACKS WITH DEEP LEARNING Researchers from Purdue University developed a deep learning –based system to automatically detect cracks in the steel components of nuclear power plants and has been shown to be more accurate than other automated systems. “Periodic inspection of the components of nuclear power plants is important to avoid accidents and ensure safe operation,” said Mohammad R. Jahanshahi, an assistant professor in Purdue University’s Lyles School of Civil Engineering and co- author of the paper. “However, current inspection practices are time consuming, tedious and subjective because they involve an operator manually locating cracks in metallic surfaces.” LEARN MORE
