The Second Stage (continued) * Vergil was a Roman poet who wrote the Aeneid (a spinoff of Homer’s Illiad and Odyssey) * Horace was a Roman poet who wrote many things including: Odes, Epodes, and Satires • It helped them to better understand Greek culture, and it would be beneficial in the future when they traveled to Greek speaking areas.
The Third Stage • 15-16 years old • Rhetor • Public Speaking • To present cases in court, to express opinions at town councils, or to give speeches at election time • Rules for different types of speeches, practice in arguing, and correct gestures
Science and Technical Subjects • To teach the things necessary for living • Wealthy people who had an interest in these specialized areas • By becoming an apprentice
