Cultura • Lessons from their mothers • Included: speaking Latin and elementary reading and writing. • Age 7 • Stayed at home • Upper class families would hire a private tutor • Cooking, cleaning, childcare, spinning, weaving. (Upper class girls learned Greek and Latin literature and how to play the lyre/sing.

  3. The First Stage • 30 students • Ludi Magister • No • A slave in charge of the students behavior and protection • Read and write Latin and Greek, and simple math.

  4. Writing Materials • Wooden tablet • Covered in a thin layer of wax and written on with a stylus • A stick made from metal, bone, or ivory • Paper • Papyrus reeds • A reed or goose feather • Sharpened and split at one end.

The Second Stage (continued) * Vergil was a Roman poet who wrote the Aeneid (a spinoff of Homer’s Illiad and Odyssey) * Horace was a Roman poet who wrote many things including: Odes, Epodes, and Satires • It helped them to better understand Greek culture, and it would be beneficial in the future when they traveled to Greek speaking areas.

  9. The Third Stage • 15-16 years old • Rhetor • Public Speaking • To present cases in court, to express opinions at town councils, or to give speeches at election time • Rules for different types of speeches, practice in arguing, and correct gestures

  10. Science and Technical Subjects • To teach the things necessary for living • Wealthy people who had an interest in these specialized areas • By becoming an apprentice
