  1. Government Information in the 21st Century: Kids! July 11, 2008 Las Vegas, New Mexico

  2. Government sites for kids?! Yes! • Many government agencies create websites for children. There are hundreds! • Agencies range from the CIA to NASA to the Library of Congress.

  3. Sounds boring. Are they any good? Government websites for kids vary. Watch out for: • Reading levels that aren’t age appropriate • Dry, static sites • Pages that just list links to other sites • Multimedia sites that don’t quite work

  4. Why bother, then? While all the sites aren’t going to capture kids’ attention, they are all: • Highly authoritative • Full of great info, perfect to supplement textbooks and answer homework questions Plus, they cover a surprisingly large array of topics; many are cool and interactive; and a lot contain really practical info

  5. What ages do they serve? • Government kids’ sites vary in age range, but collectively they range from K-12. • Many have different sections for multiple age ranges • Some have sections for educators & parents

  6. Age-appropriate examples… • Ben's Guide to U.S. Government for Kids • Kid’s Air • Girl Power! • Student Aid on the Web

  7. Try it out! Go to Ben’s Guide to U.S. Government for Kids: bensguide.gpo.gov/index.html Answer these questions: • How does the section on "How Laws are Made" differ from the Grade 3-5 version to the Grade 6-8 version? • Look through the Games & Activities section in any age group. Which one or two would you use or recommend to a library user?

  8. What kind of activities? Many of the sites have fun, interactive activities: • FBI Kids’ Page • The Space Place • MyPyramid Blast Off Game

  9. What are some practical sites? Many of the sites have really practical info for kids: • Military Teens on the Move (MTOM) / MTOM for Kids • Recycle City • Ready Kids • What Do You Like?

  10. How do I use these in my library? • How could you use government websites for kids in your library? • Have you seen any sites today that you plan to use or bookmark?
