Lesson 8: Computing Gas Mileage. Consumer Math p. 125. Gas Mileage. The average number of miles a car will travel on a gallon of gas. “Miles per gallon” means = miles ÷ gallons Distance = 400 miles Gas Used = 20 gallons 400 miles ÷ 20 gallons = 20 miles per gallon (mpg).
