  3. Presentation Title SPEAKERS: ENGR. ENYINDA NATHANIEL OKEY MANAGING DIRECTOR BRIANOK ENGINEERING NIGERIA LTD. LAGOS, NIGERIA. TOPIC: SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGS: SYNERGY BETWEEN BUILDING AND RENEWABLE ENERGY PROFESSIONALS TIME: 4:30 – 6:00pm

  4. Presentation Title Presentation Title • TOPIC Abstract: Over the years, it has become common knowledge that it is not enough to have buildings with the best aesthetic qualities, energy has to be considered. Every home or office has electrical appliances that require energy to power. In the case of Nigeria, for example, it is common knowledge that no such building exists without the arrangement of an alternative power source for the appliances. With time, the environmental standards around such homes are impaired, the running cost of such homes increase because of the additional cost of energy. The National Grid has not been helpful. This discussion is about how solar energy professionals and building technology professionals can synergize to ensure that, right from design stage of the building, sustainable energy source is included. It will be a win-win situation where the technologists handling the building help to reduce the carbon emission of such buildings, and the owners of such buildings enjoy the cost-effectiveness of the buildings.

  6. Presentation Title Presentation Title DETERMINANTS OF TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS..........CONTD...... Manufacturers involved in building materials design and manufacture, as well as those involved in designing and manufacturing solar energy facilities, have vibrant Research & Development units. Fig.1 illustrates that Research & Development activities are largely determined by modern economies. This would include competitiveness from others in the same field. It is important to also point out that, aside the impact of modern economies on Research & Development activities, there are scientific targets and limits to be obeyed. Talking of Research & Development, this is an aspect that records abysmally low marks in Nigeria. Not much is being done in this regard because funding is not available. The result has been that we have been stuck with largely obsolete technologies. Worse still is the fact that, due to our inability to fund Research & Development activities, we remain a dumping ground for technologies no more needed in the developed countries.

  7. Solar Constant.... Contd.. There would not be enough time in the course of this discussion to talk about the progress made in the building technologies. However, the major component used in the solar energy industry is the solar panel. One factor that has helped in the Research & Development activities within the solar panels industry is that there is a scientific goal for solar panels to reach. Fig. 2: Solar Constant defined (https://www.slideserve.com/muriel/solar-constant)

  8. Solar Constant.... Contd.. Solar constant literally means that a solar panel should ideally generate as much as 1300W for every one square meter! It is now the efforts of Research & Development to meet this target. Presently, the commercially available solar panels are far from this dream.

  9. 4. PROGRESS IN SOLAR PANEL MANUFACTURE Fig. 3: Progress in solar panel manufacture (https://www.solarpowerrocks.com/solar-basics/how-much-electricity-does-a-solar-panel-produce/)

  10. Progress in solar panel manufacture.... Contd... • Fig. 3 is an illustration of the progress being made to produce solar panels that could get closer to a solar panel of 1m x 1m generating 1000W of solar power. • From the illustration on Fig. 3, it is clear that: • The same solar panel size that generated 20W of electrical power in 1954, was able to generate 200W by 2012; by 2018, the same size is could generate 320W! • The reference dimensions being used are 65inches (1.65m) and 39inches (0.99m); this will produce a solar panel area of 1.65m x 0.99m = 1.63m2. • Research & Development activities will continue until a solar panel with dimensions of 1m x 1m (1m2) can generate at least 1000W.

  11. Presentation Title 5. TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION IN NIGERIA: THE PHONE SUBSCRIPTION Fig. 4: Mobile phone subscription in Nigeria (2017) (https://www.statista.com/statistics/501044/number-of-mobile-cellular-subscriptions-in-nigeria/) When the mobile phone industry first arrived Nigeria, adoption was poor. With time, and observations from potential users, the coast became clear. Fig. 4 is an illustration of how fast the industry developed as at 2017. This industry has become so successful that most Nigerian phone subscribers now have two phone lines.

  12. Presentation Title 6. SOLAR ENERGY CHALLENGE FOR BUILDING ENGINEERS AND TECHNOLOGISTS FROM THE UNITED STATES 1.00 All new California Homes Will Have Solar in 2020 by Chris Meehan on 05/10/2018 in Renewable Energy, Solar Energy, Solar Licensing, Solar Power (https://www.solarreviews.com/news/all-new-california-homes-solar-2020-051018/) California’s energy commission took a big step yesterday (May 9) in approving a new policy that that will require all new homes in the Golden State to have solar as of 2020. The new policy was implemented as part of California’s new 2019 Building Energy Efficiency Standards, which seek to cut energy use in California homes by more than 50 percent. It’s a first for the country and was hailed by the solar industry and environmental advocates.

  14. Presentation Title SOLAR ENERGY CHALLENGE FOR BUILDING ENGINEERS AND TECHNOLOGISTS FROM THE UNITED STATES.............. CONTD... 2.00 Colorado’s ‘Bold’ Plan For Climate Action Moves Ahead With New State Laws By Natalia V. Navarro | natalia.navarro@cpr.org May 30, 2019 (https://www.cpr.org/story/colorado-s-bold-plan-for-climate-action-moves-ahead-with-new-state-laws). Standing in a field surrounded by solar panels in Arvada on Thursday, Gov. Jared Polis celebrated the state’s progress on combating climate change. Polis unveiled his plan to get Colorado to 100 percent renewable energy by 2040. He signed seven new bills into law intended to limit the state’s contributions to global warming.

  15. Presentation Title SOLAR ENERGY CHALLENGE FOR BUILDING ENGINEERS AND TECHNOLOGISTS FROM THE UNITED STATES.............. CONTD... 3.00 Florida Solar Panel Law Passes Requiring Homeowners To Go Solar Now! (https://powersolarphoenix.com/florida-solar-panel-law/) South Miami Florida’s solar panel law just passed on 7/18/2017 requiring new home builders and homeowners to install solar panels. The city commission and commissioner Josh Liebman approved it by a vote of 4-1 on Tuesday night. This law goes into effect Sept 18th, 2017.

  16. 7. WHAT THE AMERICAN SOLAR LEGISLATIONS ON BUILDINGS ARE ABOUT • For existing buildings, owners of premises can now install solar on their roofs. • For new building designs, approval of the building design depends on whether the building design has provision for solar roof mount. • New buildings must make roof space enough to accommodate all the solar panels to be installed. • It is essential to carry out a pre-audit to confirm that the roof space available is capable of carrying 100% of the solar panels required for the energy needs of the building. Fig. 5: Illustration of the California Legislation for Roof Mount Solar (https://www.hoalawblog.com/california-condominium-association-needs-know-new-solar-bill-ab-634-yes-owners-may-able-install-solar-energy-system-common-area-roof/)

  17. 9. THE SYNERGY • With this new development in the United States, just like what happened with local phone subscriptions in Nigeria, it is important for our building engineers and technologists to start to add solar energy skills to what they already know and do. • Already, certain Housing Estates in parts of Nigeria are being designed to run on solar energy. More existing buildings in Nigeria are being hooked up to solar energy, even though there have been some constraints posed by the design of the roofs. • Building professionals should embrace themselves to learn about solar energy, especially the issues that have to do with: • Energy audit to determine appliance requirements in a building. • Issues bordering on battery storage room design. • The number of solar panels to be required in a building. • Solar panels orientation in a building • Energy cost-benefit analysis
