Engineering is… What is Engineering? • The process of solving problems and designing the human made world. • “Engineering is the application of math and science to create something of value from our natural resources.” • Different from Science – “study of the natural world” but they cannot be neatly separated.
Who are Engineers • Person with Ingenuity, Creativity, Vision, and a desire to improve lives. • Society calls upon engineers to not only envision what the world will look like tomorrow, but more importantly to make tomorrow happen. • They are anyone and everyone!
What is the difference between Scientists and Engineers? • Scientists seek to explain how things work through discovery, to help us understand and describe our world. • Use the Scientific Method • Engineers use this information to create objects and devices that help humans and society. • Use the Engineering Design process • Both are needed to develop and advance society.

Engineering Engineers work in teams because they know that two heads are better than one and that we are smarter together! So… As you start working remember that your best design will only be accomplished if you all work together and consider everyone’s ideas. Use your imagination Be Creative

Great Arizona Ice House Challenge Scenario: • Tucson is a HOT place to live! The summers get hot enough to fry and egg on the sidewalk. So how do you to stay cool on a blisteringly hot day? Most of us stay inside, in the comfort of our air-conditioned houses. There is just one problem with this. We are consuming a huge amount of energy by cooling our houses and this is contributing to worldwide problem of climate change. • Pollution and climate change are serious problems that affect both our everyday lives and the environment and world as a whole. Many experts believe that if action is not taken immediately, we will be unable to reverse the damage that has been done. Our dependence on fossil fuels (coal and oil) to keep our houses cool is increasingly problematic due to the detrimental effects they have on the environment. The two main solutions that have been proposed are reducing energy use (conservation) and using renewable energy. Ultimately, both of these strategies are needed to solve this problem, but in this project we are just going to focus on reducing our energy use. The graphs below illustrate our energy consumption.
Great Arizona Ice House Challenge Task: • You and your team of engineers have been hired to tackle this problem of staying cool while reducing our use of energy. Your job is to design a house that stays cool without the use of electricity. Your team must research, design, build, and test a prototype for your design. To accomplish this task, you will use the engineering design process to develop the best solution.
Design Requirements Requirements • Meets the measurement specification above • The house needs to stand up by itself and cannot fall or break if pressed on • The doors and windows cannot be blocked • No more than ½ inch of materials can be on the inside wall, ceiling or floor • No more than 1 inch of materials on the outside of the walls. • The roof cannot be more the 3 inches high or extend more than 3 inches from the sides of the box. • No unsafe or hazardous materials can be used in your design
Judging the final design • Thermal efficiency (primary objective) • Meets requirement/constraints • Sturdiness (stands on its own and won’t fall over or break if pressed on) • Looks (Unique and aesthetically pleasing) • Cost effective (see list of cost) • Sustainability – use of recycled or reused materials
