We use comparatives when we compare two things. We can sometimes just add the suffix -er. My coffee is hotter than my ice tea.
We use superlatives when we compare three or more things. We can sometimes just add the suffix -est. The whale is the largest animal in the world.
When we use comparatives and superlatives, we can’t always just use the suffixes -er and –est. These sentences are NOT correct: Pie tastes gooder than cookies. Pie is the goodest dessert there is.
We sometimes have to use other words when we compare and contrast two different things. Pie tastes better than cookies. Pie is the best dessert there is. These sentences ARE correct:
Comparatives and Superlatives Use the comparative form to compare two things: Soccer is more exciting than baseball. Use the superlative form to compare three or more: Soccer is the most exciting sport there is.
