  1. Visual Spacial The Aztecs used pictures, or glyphs for their writing system. Some glyphs were drawings of objects, and others were meant to show ideas. For example a picture of a shield and a club meant was. Some glyphs represented historic events. Create a glyph and summarize with a few words what your glyph represents.

  2. Anchor Activity Aztec codices were images only-no written language. Create your own codex illustrating an activity you participate in regularly or a ceremony or a celebration. Either draw your pictures or create a collage and then accordion-fold the paper. On the back, write the meaning of this codex.

  3. Interpersonal You are a marketing executive and you have been asked to: 1. Create a motto that would encapsulate Aztec citizenship. OR 2. Make a bumper sticker to encapsulate Aztec citizenship.

  5. Naturalistic Think about the how hard it is for the Aztecs to prepare their food. Maize was a staple in their diet. They had to use a mortar and pestle and grind the kernels to make tortillas. Find out what other foods were part of the Aztec diet and prepare a recipe the class could try.

  6. Intrapersonal You are a member of the Aztec Community. Take the perspective of a person within the social structure of Aztec society and produce a journal entry from that perspective.

  8. Logical Mathematical (part 2) Tenochtitlan, the capital city of the Aztecs was home to hundreds of temples. Most of them were built in a pyramid shape to resemble a sacred mountain. Architecture of the Aztecs included temples, houses, roads and political buildings. Aztec architecture presented a sense of order and symmetry and its design elements displayed the power of the kingdom. Definition of symmetry - balanced proportions; also: beauty of form arising from balanced proportions. Close agreement in size, shape,and relativeposition of parts on opposite sides of a dividing line or plane or around a central point.

  10. Interpersonal Poetry was a highly valued art in Aztec society. By creating poetry, the Aztecs felt that they were imitating their god, Ometeotl (oh-meh-THE-ohtl), the creator of the universe. They hoped their poetry would give them immortality. During peaceful times, writing poetry was one thing Aztec warriors often did. Poetry was created to praise the gods, to share stories, and to celebrate the beauty of the natural world. Usually the Aztec sang their poem or recited them to music. Often Aztec poetry taught a lesson. You are an Aztec create a poem with images and music.

The Aztec way of life is different than yours but there are similarities too. Create a journal entry from the perspective of a Spanish soldier with this in mind. Think about similarities and differences in religion, art, architecture, social structure, clothing, and education.

Does it apply to the Spanish during their conquest of Mexico? Do you agree or disagree with this quotation related to our society? Create a collage, powerpoint, videoclip or poster to show your position. Give evidence to support your position. You could use the Socialcam app to produce a videoclip.

  24. Anchor Activity Research the term “code of chivalry”. Create your own code of chivalry. Explain how it governs your behavior with your teacher, parents, classmates or friends.

  25. Anchor Activity What do you learn at school about citizenship? What do you learn at home about citizenship? Show your thinking of what good citizenship means to you in some form and present it to class.

  26. Anchor Activity The Virtues of an ideal Aztec citizen are listed in the chart below. Do you think these same virtues are important in Canadian society today? Why or why not? Which virtues would you add? Which would you remove? Make your own chart of what virtues are most important and why.

  27. Anchor Activity Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa, said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” What did Mandela mean? Write a paragraph or videotape a commentary giving your response to Nelson Mandela’s idea.

  28. Anchor Activity You are an Aztec artisan. Create a piece of art that is in keeping with the time period. Google images of Aztec art and create! Use your imagination and choose a medium that you prefer.
