  2. Name • The Sioux Tribe has many different names such as, Nakota, Dakota, and Lakota. • Lakota means “people of the forest”. • Dakota means “friend” or “ally” http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://bp3.blogger.com

  3. Territory • The Sioux live in the Great Plains (sometimes referred to as the Plain Indians). • Live in the northern forests and along the Mississippi River in Minnesota.

  5. Environment/landscape • They live on the North and South Dakota border. • The landscape of the Sioux tribe was mostly of plains. • Whenever they moved around, they were fairly near the Missouri River. http://www.standingrock.org/image/cache/rockflag1.gif

  6. Food • Hunted: • Moose, Deer, Elk, Muskrats, Badgers, Otters, Raccoons, Fish, Buffalo, Pigeons, Cranes, Ducks, and Geese depending on the season. • In the Dakota Garden • Corn, Pumpkins, Beans, Melons, “Dakota Turnip” http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://bp0.blogger.com

Clothing • Buffalo hides were used to make • Robes, Tipi covers, clothing, moccasins, Bags, and Carrying cases. • Deer and Elk were also used to make clothes • The women used beads and bones and other natural objects that they thought were beautiful to decorate their clothing. • Women wore: • Dresses and leggings. • Men wore: • Shirts and breechcloths. http://www.turtletrack.org/Issues01/Co05192001/Art/Warshirt.jpg

Housing • They lived in tipis • The tipis could be moved easily so that they could follow the buffalo. • It would sometimes take 16-18 buffalo hides sewn together to cover one tipi • The cover was held together by wooden pins • There would be a whole in the top to allow smoke to leave the tipi so that fires could be built inside. • There was a smoke flap that would control the temperature inside and keep rain and snow out. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.sonofthesouth.net

Spiritual Beliefs • The Sioux believe that everything has its own spirit that could change and show itself in a different way. • They had ceremonies which were centered around one certain spirit. • The Sun Dance is a regular custom that takes place before each buffalo hunt. http://www.deathreference.com/images/medd_01_img0058.jpg

Spiritual Beliefs • The Sioux Tribe would pray to Wakan Tanka, the Great Spirit which was the spirit of the East, West, North and South, Mother Earth, and to the Six Directions. • The Great Spirit represented the unity of all spirits as one. • Sometimes the men in the tribe would pray in solitude for days at a time. http://snoedel.punt.nl/upload/pla.0/mini-Sioux-Courtship.jpg

Transportation • The tribe had horses by the mid 1700’s. • They used these to travel and hunt buffalo witch they depended heavily on. • They were able to travel longer distances than any other Dakota tribes. • For long distance travels, the tribe used a travois, which is the French word for shafts of a cart • The carts were made out of a cart with two wooden poles • For travel by water they used boats covered in bark and buffalo hide http://sharonsharpe.com/images/travois.jpg
