  5. European, international and national programmes • The TRKC contains • 11 European programmes • 2 international programmes • 3 multilateral programmes in EU-15 • 224 national programmes (166 from EU-15, 26 from new MS, and 32 from other ERA countries)

  6. Consolidated project database including 962 EU, 20 international and 3.733 national projects. Ongoing: regular updates and consolodation. European, national and international projects’ database

  8. Three levels of analysis 2. Thematic analysis 1. Project level analysis 3. Policy level analysis

  9. Analysis level 1: Project level analysis Through the labelling process for every project those themes out of 30 in total have been identified where the project contributes significantly. For every such theme a short and concise paragraph will be written to present the key findings of the project in relation to the objectives of the theme

  10. Analysis level 2: Thematic analysis For each of the 30 themes a separate paper will be written A Thematic Research Summary presents the scope of the theme, the policy context, a synthesis of findings and references

Analysis level 3: Policy level analysis Whilst the 30 themes are more generic and fixed for the running time of EXTR@Web this type of analysis should give the flexibility to provide information on ad hoc policy priorities. These are typically composed of several themes. The condensed information given in various Thematic Research Summaries will be used to write policy brochures. The titles or kind of policy priorities are a matter of ad hoc requirements

Process for project data preparation and analysis Project identification, selection & clustering member states + consortium/subcontractors Consolidated database Allocation of projects to theme leaders (EU) & to country responsible (national) Contacts the project co-ordinator, requests the completion of reporting forms Project is important or needed for analysis, theme leader/country responsible provides profile and result summary Project profile Progress summary Result summary (Final report) Project co-ordinator not available or fails to provide reporting forms Priority 3: Labelling Priority 1: Labelling & project level analysis per label Priority 2: Labelling Thematic analysis 30 volumes

Thematic Research Summaries • Designed to provide summaries of: • Research in progress • Principal research results • For all our 30 themes • Structure: • Introduction • Scope (definition of the theme and sub-themes) • Policy context • Principally EU policy • But also major national policies • Synthesis of findings • References • Three annexes (projects; the TRKC; the authors)

Depending on the availability of significant number of results from completed projects, the sub-theme structure will be consolidated in the 2nd and 3rd Summaries The final Summary will in addition contain Up-dates of Annual Thematic Research Summaries • Key research findings • Overall policy implications • Identification of possible research gaps

Incomplete project contact details for European projects (634 out of 777) Disappointing feedback from project coordinators (72 out of 634) EU projects Issues • Continuous effort on soliciting feedback via « clustering approach » and with support from Project Officers • Activation of fallback option whereby the consortium adopts pro-active approach in project data collection for projects selected for analysis Solutions

Heterogeneous content of national listings with national imbalances Quantity vs quality of listed projects Ownership of project prioritisation Insufficient & imbalanced feedback from project coordinators National projects Issues • Quality of projects to supersede quantity of listed projects • National teams to abridge national project listings and cluster projects where appropriate • Activation of fallback option whereby the consortium adopts pro-active approach in project data collection for projects selected for analysis Solutions

Equal distribution of 10 European and 10 national projects per theme among sub-themes (typically 2+2) Project final report expected not later than end 2005 Proper labelling of selected projects (maximum 5 labels) Research results needed for analysis For thematic analysis along 30 themes, a minimum number of research results will be required according to certain parameters
