Mobile Mapping Systems - An Affordable Solution Presented by Jeff and Daniel Fagerman
What is a MMS? • A vehicular based imaging and LiDAR data collection system.
What does a MMS do? • Capture accurate geo-referenced imagery and LiDAR point clouds safely • Reduce field time • Produce higher quality data
How does a MMS work? • Cameras capture the visible (LOS) environment • Laser scanners collects XYZ and intensity • POS via GPS/GNSS, IMU, and DMI provides accurate positioning • Processing software synchronizes and registers data
Why use a MMS? • Survey roadways, railways, bridges, buildings, and coastlines • Collect roadway assets for GIS databases • Measure large volumes (e.g. mines, landfills, pits, coal piles) • Provide first response assessment (e.g. tornado/earthquake damage) • Augment other data collection systems
Who makes a MMS? • Survey grade systems • Optech, Riegl, Streetmapper, Trimble • Cost: >$750k • GIS grade systems • Topcon IP-S2 HD • MDL Dynascan (slow @ 5mph) • Cost: $200-$400k
Why are MMS’s expensive? • Sophisticated and expensive components • Few sales • Lots of R&D • Required pre/post-processing software
Who owns a MMS? • Large engineering and mapping firms • DOT • Various service providers
What is the future MMS? • Lighter • More compact • More versatile • More data – stereo imagery, LiDAR, FLIR, sound • Easier boresighting techniques • Simpler data handling • Lower cost
How can MMS’s be affordable? • Less proprietary components • More vendors • Greater demand • Necessity – the mother of invention
ScanLook: Next Generation MMS • Lighter – Under 60 lbs • Compact @ 8” x 30” x 24” • Versatile – swap vehicles (car, truck, atv, boat) in minutes • Custom sensor integration possible • Simple one time scanner boresight • No large storage/computer devices required • Survey and GIS grade system • Static and Mobile system in one
ScanLook: Market Impact • Lower Price: $250-350k (~60% less) • Competition for work no longer national • Better data for existing markets • Opens up non-traditional mobile markets • Agricultural, forensics, insurance, realty • Allows software to automate more tasks • Data is affordable, timely, and accurate
Conclusion • An affordable MMS augments aerial platforms (planes and helicopters) • Allows for rapid turn-around • Provides competitive means for data capture
